Mother's Day, a day dedicated to moms, is celebrated each year with people looking at their mums in a new light: appreciation. We at Masala! take this opportunity to look at all the iconic Bollywood moms who have made Hindi cinema a much richer place with the portrayal of their roles. Whether it is Nirupa Roy in Amar Akbar Anthony or Kirron Kher in Om Shanti Om or Shefali Shah in Dil Dhadakne Do, all these moms have one thing in common: their roles and their performances were unforgettable. So here's looking at you, Bollywood Filmi Mums!

1. Nirupa Roy in Amar Akbar Anthony

Amar Akbar Anthony was the story of three brothers who were separated when they were very young. Growing up to be Vinod Khanna (Amar), Rishi Kapoor (Akbar) and Amitabh Bachchan (Anthony), the one mom who ties them together and becomes the true meaning of their lives is Nirupa Roy.

2. Nirupa Roy in Deewar

Bangla gari =/= mom. She is the trump card between Vijay Verma (Amitabh Bachchan) and Ravi Verma (Shashi Kapoor). Nirupa Roy plays Sumitra Devi the mother to Vijay and Ravi. She is the conscience and the truth of the film who makes the audience think of how important moms are.

3. Rakhee in Karan Arjun

Mere Karan Arjun Ayenge!’ says Rakhee in the Salman Khan and Shah Rukh Khan film Karan Arjun. Also take a look at this hilariously nostalgic song in which the true meaning of sons being the apple of their mom’s eye.

4. Reema Lagoo in Hum Aapke Hain Koun

Reema Lagoo played the mother to Madhuri Dixit’s character, Nisha, in the Sooraj Barjatya family drama Hum Aapke Hain Koun.

5. Reema Lagoo in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai

Reema Lagoo also played Anjali (Kajol)’s mom in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai who also counsels her daughter about love and loss.

6. Reema Lagoo in Vaastav

Did you know? Playing the mother of a son gone astray, Reema was only a year older than Sanjay Dutt when she played his mom in this gangster flick.

7. Farida Jalal in Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge

Farida Jalal plays the mother to young Kajol and becomes the counsellor/friend to her daughter as Simran has fallen in love with a boy her father will never agree to!

8. Ratna Pathak Shah in Khoobsurat

Ratna Pathak Shah played Fawad Khan’s mother in Sonam Kapoor’s film Khoobsoorat where Ratna played an aristocratic snobby mom to perfection.

9. Kirron Kher in Om Shanti Om

Kirron Kher in Om Shanti Om was a mix of melodrama and madness. We absolutely loved her in it!

10. Jaya Bachchan in Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham

Jaya Bachchan played a subservient, loving mom but totally loses it in the end. If you haven’t watched the film, you really must to know half of the pop culture references that exist today because of this film.

11. Shefali Shah in Dil Dhadakne Do

Shefali Shah is an actress par excellence and in this film she portrayed the role of a modern, conflicted wife beautifully.
