Being a Bollywood star may seem glamorous on the outside but it’s quite a tough job, if you really pay attention to how much hard work goes into this field of work. Some Bollywood stars have had to work harder than others because they have had to suffer potentially or actually life-threatening diseases. Here are 10 Bollywood actors who have shown the true spirit of motivation by resuming their work after struggling with serious illnesses.
1. Deepika Padukone – Depression
Deepika Padukone spoke about her struggle with depression and later began a Live, Love, Laugh Foundation that talked about different people struggling with depression and reducing stigma around mental health.
2. Irrfan Khan – Cancer
The Hindi Medium star was diagnosed with neuroendocrine cancer and was undergoing treatment in the United States. Thankfully, this talented actor is back in Bollywood of late and is set to appear opposite Kareena Kapoor Khan in Angrezi Medium.
3. Sonali Bendre – Cancer
Sonali Bendre announced on her Instagram that she has been diagnosed with cancer. She later went through the journey with the support of many of her followers on social media and also started a book club.
4. Rakesh Roshan – Cancer
Rakesh Roshan’s cancer was announced by son Hrithik Roshan hence, “Asked my dad for a picture this morning. Knew he wouldnt miss gym on surgery day. He is probably the strongest man I know. Got diagnosed with early stage squamous cell carcinoma of the throat a few weeks ago, but he is in full spirits today as he proceeds to battle it. As a family we are fortunate and blessed to have a leader like him.” In the year 2000, Roshan was also attacked by unknown assailants and two bullets had hit him as well.
5. Manisha Koirala – Cancer
According to a report in India Today, Manisha Koirala spoke up about her ovarian cancer and said, “Now that I look back, the treatment is not too different here in India and there. Only here the cancer fear is so much. They think it means death. That's why many patients don't share their story because you are scared and people around you are scared too. Being a celebrity I just wanted to get out, do my bit and come back and if I had to die then so be it but at least I did my level best.”
6. Lisa Ray – Cancer
Lisa Ray was diagnosed with a form of blood cancer. She was declared cancer free in 2010 but her cancer relapsed in 2012. In 2016, she proved to be a true fighter and returned to Bollywood as she appeared in Ram Gopal Varma’s film, Veerappan.
7. Salman Khan – Trigeminal neuralgia
In an interview, Salman spoke about his painful disease which caused him severe pain. “That’s one disease that basically has the highest rates of suicides,” said the Dabangg star. “There is so much of pain.” Salman added, “I realised that I need to work really hard. No matter how much pain you are going through.”
8. Anurag Basu – Blood cancer
Anurag suffered from a type of blood cancer and spoke up about it to IANS. "Previously I have always shied away from making a film on cancer primarily because it would mean reliving the experience, and secondly I always felt guilty of juicing your own tragedy into a commercial film. This topic is very close to me and after every film I think about it. There is a script that I have written on my cancer and hospital bit, and may be one day it will come out either as a book or as a film," said the Jagga Jasoos director.
9. Amitabh Bachchan – Ruptured Spleen
Amitabh Bachchan suffered from a ruptured spleen on one of his sets (Manmohan Desai’s Coolie)and had to be immediately rushed to the hospital. It took some time but the angry young man was back in action soon!
10. Hrithik Roshan – Brain clot
In 2013, Hrithik Roshan suffered from a brain clot but was fine soon and returned to work as soon as he was able to.
