Pakistanis across the globe were devastated when Pakistan’s cricket team was defeated by arch-rivals, India, in Sunday’s World Cup match at Old Trafford, England. India defeated Pakistan by 89 runs and this reinforced their position in the tournament. Social media was abuzz with memes, tweets, harsh criticism and celebratory messages from both Indians and Pakistanis. Some shared heartfelt messages for the losing teams, while some bashed the team for their poor performance.

This also gave rise to a Twitter feed between tennis star Sania Mirza and former Pakistani model, Veena Malik, whereby the latter was accusing the former of being responsible for her son and the Pakistani team indulging in junk food ahead of the match.

In a more positive post however, daughter of Pakistani actor Javed Sheikh, took to Instagram to share her views on the match and Pakistan’s loss. She dons a casual outfit with the colours of the Pakistan flag and paired it with a Pakistan team cap. The Yeh Zindagi Hai actor is all smiles in her picture and penned a heartfelt note.

“Many a times, in our personal and professional experiences, we face setbacks. The most hurtful feeling in those moments is to be judged and scrutinised negatively by our own.
We fall only to rise again,” she said in the first half of her message.

She then went on to add, “We must support our team through their victory and defeat. Our team has done us proud in the past and will continue to do so in the future too, inshAllah! Pakistan zindabad.”

Her message and post comes amid lots of harsh criticism for the team. Lots of unhappy fans took to social media to share their dismay. There were however, some messages of support for the boys in green and #WeStandWithPakistan started trending on Twitter.
