It could be the storyline loosely based on Manju Kapur’s novel Custody, but ultimately it was the oh-so-romantic chemistry between telly stars Karan Patel and Divyanka Tripathi that charmed the viewers of Yeh Hai Mohabbatein. Produced by Ekta Kapoor of Balaji Telefims, the show first aired on Star Plus in 2013.
Winner of the Best Show at the Masala Awards 2015, the show received the highest ratings of Indian serials in the UK until the end of March 2015 reaching 156,500 viewers.
The plot is partially based on Manju Kapur's novel Custody and follows Ishita, who is Tamil, and Raman, who is Punjabi. Ishita is sterile and gets attached emotionally to Raman's daughter, Ruhi, who lives with her divorced father. Raman's ex-wife, Shagun, lives with her boyfriend Ashok and Adi, her son with Raman.
