Milap Zaveri’s revenge saga Marjaavaan, which hit the screens on 15th November, continues to do well at the box office. The film -- starring Sidharth Malhotra, Tara Sutaria and Riteish Deshmukh in the lead roles -- had a decent opening at the box office earning INR 7.03 and reported its highest earnings on its first Sunday, INR 10.18 crore. It faced a decline in earnings after the first weekend, but still managed to maintain a steady collection during the week and earned INR 4-5 crore on Friday, the 8th day of its release. So far, the film has earned a total of INR 43 crore and may soon cross the INR 50 crore mark.
The film has performed well in UP, Bihar, Rajasthan, Maharashtra and NIzam. However, it did not do well in some other areas such as Delhi NCR and East Punjab. It has been facing competition from Ayushmann Khurrana’s comedy film Bala, which was released on 8th November but has emerged as a blockbuster and minted INR 100 crore so far.
Marjaavaan brought together Sidharth, as the protagonist, and Riteish, as the antagonist. The two actors previously appeared together in similar roles in Mohit Suri’s 2014 film Ek Villain. Marjaavan has become Sidharth’s 5th highest all-time grosser. The top 5 list of Sidharth’s successful films also includes: i) Ek Villan (105.5 crore), ii) Brothers (82.47 crore), iii) Kapoor & Sons (73.03 crore), and iv) Student of the Year (70 crore). Marjaavaan, has, however received a lot of negative feedback and reviews. Though the actors have been appreciated for their performances, the film’s story and direction has been criticised. Madhuri V wrote in her review for an entertainment portal, “For someone who has grown up on a staple of 'angry young man' Amitabh Bachchan's films and other masala entertainers of the 70s-80s, Marjaavaan is a dagger's pierce.”
