Designer to the stars Manish Malhotra has a very special connection with Dubai. Today (October 1, 2014) Manish is in the city for a very special fashion show in collaboration with Studio 8 and Masala! Ahead of the show, we caught up with the acclaimed designer for a quick chat on his collection, his love for Dubai and the gorgeous ladies he has dressed.
Could you describe the collection you will be showcasing at the Studio 8 fashion show?
This season we are presenting a new language for the neo-bride to express her joy, style and individuality in every moment that she is celebrating. It’s the smaller wedding festivities that lead up to the big day allowing the bride to set her own rules. This collection has been specially curated for occasions where brides can experiment and have fun with their outfits, be it at the engagement, cocktail, sangeet or even to take along as part of their wedding trousseau.
You recently unveiled your first jewellery piece. Do you plan to explore the world of jewellery designing any further?
Yes, I would love to. As a stylist, jewellery has always been a vital part of the looks I have created. However this is one of my very first steps into the world of jewellery designing. When Forevermark came with a proposal to design an exquisite jewellery piece that would eventually be a milestone in the world of design, I had to be a part of it. As a brand they believe in craftsmanship and precision and that’s synonymous with my brand DNA as well. This is just the beginning. There is a lot to achieve in the world of design.
What, according to you, makes Dubai such a hotspot for contemporary trends in fashion?
We all know that Dubai as a market is quite fashion forward. As a brand, I am really thrilled to be appreciated and loved the way I am in this city. Dubai and I have a very deep association, since 2006 when I first opened my flagship store here. Very few cities in the world have so much to offer in terms of cultural diversity, affluence, infrastructure and the overall drive for excellence and growth. Moreover, Dubai is a perfect blend of traditional values and modernity which I really value professionally and personally.
You have worked with almost all of the leading actresses. Who, among the young stars, impresses you the most with her style sense?
All of them. Today, right from Deepika Padukone to Kangana Ranaut to Alia Bhatt, they all embrace their individuality and carry it off with confidence and grace; that’s what makes their style interesting.
Which recent movie have you enjoyed working in the most?
I think in recent times, it has to be Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani and Chennai Express. Next coming up is Happy New Year where I have styled Deepika Padukone and I am also very thrilled to have got the opportunity to style Rekhaji in her next film.
In the years that you have been part of the Masala! Awards, how would you describe its evolution?
Well, every year they have gotten better and better. I have been a part of their journey and have seen them evolve beautifully.
