If there was one thing Bollywood fanatics eagerly awaited this Valentine’s Day, it was the release of Imtiaz Ali’s Love Aaj Kal, starring budding actors Kartik Aaryan and Sara Ali Khan. The film hit cinema screens with high expectations from audiences, critics and the duo’s fans. However, much to everyone’s disappointment, the flick has only witnessed a downward trend since its opening day. The movie started off with a fairly decent INR12.40 crore (Friday) but it took a major hit the following day, with an even bigger blow the next day. It collected INR8.01 crore on Saturday followed by INR8.10 on Sunday.
Sara Ali Khan and Kartik Aaryan in Love Aaj Kal
Negative word-of-mouth, the film’s storyline and Sara’s performance are being said to have affected the numbers of Love Aaj Kal. Trade analyst Taran Adarsh shared the figures on Twitter and wrote, “#LoveAajKal is rejected... Dips on Day 2, falls flat on Day 3... Advantage #ValentinesDay [Day 1], else *3-day total* would be lower... Tough road ahead [weekdays]... Fri 12.40 cr, Sat 8.01 cr, Sun 8.10 cr. Total: ₹ 28.51 cr. #India biz. #LoveAajKal weekend: ₹ 27.86 cr.”
#LoveAajKal dips on Day 2... Shocking part is, the decline has come at metros/multiplexes, which is its target audience... Weak at Tier-2 cities as well as mass circuits... Needs a miracle to salvage the show on Day 3... Fri 12.40 cr, Sat 8.01 cr. Total: ₹ 20.41 cr. #India biz.— taran adarsh (@taran_adarsh) February 16, 2020
He also compared Kartik’s other releases to Love Aaj Kal. “#KartikAaryan versus #KartikAaryan... *Opening Weekend* biz...2019: #PatiPatniAurWoh ₹ 35.94 cr 2019: #LukaChuppi ₹ 32.13 cr 2020: #LoveAajKal ₹ 28.51 cr 2018: #SonuKeTituKiSweety ₹ 26.57 cr 2015: #PyaarKaPunchnama2 ₹ 22.75 cr 2011: #PyaarKaPunchnama ₹ 3.25 cr #India biz,” he added. Taran expressed shock at the fact that the decline in footfall was at multiplexes, which are the film’s target audience. “It needs a miracle to salvage the show on Day 3.” However, Love Aaj Kal still remains the second biggest opener of Bollywood in 2020 after Ajay Devgn’s Tanhaji: The Unsung Hero, which earned Rs 15.10 crore on its day one. Fingers crossed, we hope Love Aaj Kal recovers in the days to come.
