India is known for its rich heritage of festivals and religious traditions. One of them is Karwa Chauth 2024, also known as Karva Chauth or Karaka Chaturthi. The festival is primarily observed by Hindu women predominantly in Northern and Western parts of India. This festival is considered auspicious and marked by fasting and praying for the long life, safety, and good health of their respective husbands or future partners. The fasting tradition on Karva Chauth 2024 is strict, as those women who observe the fast usually refrain from consuming food as well as water from sunrise until the moon is sighted at dusk. Interestingly, the festival coincides with the wheat-sowing period in India.

Karva Chauth usually falls on the fourth day following the full moon during the Krishna Paksha of the Kartik month of the Hindu calendar. This year, Karva Chauth 2024 will be observed on Sunday, October 20.

Karwa Chauth 2024 Significance
Karwa Chauth is known to signify the strength of the marital bond between couples. The tradition is believed to be traced back to the story of the Mahabharata. It relates to the tale of Savitri, who implored the God of death, Lord Yama, for the soul of her spouse.
Another legend in the Hindu epic is regarding the Pandavas and their wife Draupadi. After Arjuna travelled to the Nilgiris to pray and meditate for a few days, Draupadi sought help from her brother Lord Krishna. He advised her to fast as strictly as Goddess Parvati did for her husband Shiva and his safety. Draupadi observed the fast strictly and Arjuna soon came home safely.
Karwa Chauth rituals
On the day of Karva Chauth, women often wake up early in the morning, finish their morning chores, and worship Lord Shiva, Parvati and Ganesha according to the Karva Chauth Pooja vidhi. They then eat something, however, this has to be done before Sunrise.
In the evening a ritualistic procedure is followed for ending the fast. This includes arranging the puja materials, lighting a diya and incense sticks, reciting mantras, and making offerings. The fast is ended on moonrise by looking at the moon through a seive and then at the husband’s face, followed by prayers.
