The year 2017 was called the year of the Indies. It was movies with small budgets but with a large heart that won the fancy of filmgoers. Movies like Newton, Barielly ki Barfi, Shubh Mangal Savdhaan and others succeeded where biggies like Tubelight and Jab Harry Met Sejal failed.
The bottomline: Concepts and ideas work, not big stars. It is in this category that one can include the upcoming film Kuch Bheege Alfaaz. Directed by Onir (director of the acclaimed My Brother Nikhil), the film is about love in the online world.
Two strangers connect over a mis-dial and build a relationship over whatsapp conversations and emojis. An RJ going by the name of RJ Alfaaz, who hosts a show on requited love, has a fan in a girl called Archana who suffers from leukoderma. A call by mistake gets them connected and soon, romance blossoms. Set in Kolkata, the film’s director Onir says the monsoons of the city have lent it a special flavour. The film stars Geetanjali Thapa, a National Award winning actress and Zain Khan, a poet, musician and actor from Kashmir.
The trailer shows a chirpy Geetanjali and an intense Zain exchange love notes over whatsapp. Though a tad bit predictable, there is a certain sweetness in the romance, something that you saw in 90s films. The flavour is complete with the remixed version of the 90s classic love song Pehla Nasha.
While the concept is something relatable with technology playing a huge role in romance in urban areas, the question remains whether such films will have an audience. Though, if you are someone with a discerning taste for something different and new, Kuch Bheege Alfaaz has a certain winsome charm that hopefully extends beyond its trailer.
