Kendall Jenner, Justin Bieber and an Egg: Here are the Most-Liked Instagram Photos of the Decade
As the year draws to a close, we take a look back, year-by-year, at some of the most-liked photos on Instagram
The decade is coming to a close. A decade that seems to have kicked off with a bang and has been packing powerful punches with each passing year is finally coming to an end. Likewise, one of the most popular social media platforms was founded at the start of the decade. Yes, it’s none other than Instagram – one that all of us use and love. The photo-sharing app quickly gained momentum and many influencers that we see today, might have never existed, if it wasn’t for Instagram. Soon after, celebrities also jumped on the bandwagon and starting sharing aspects from their life – to stay more connected with their fans. But one thing that stayed consistent since it rolled out its “like” feature is the number of likes on an Instagram photo. While now the app has finally limited the number to be seen by users, we listed down the most-liked photos on the gram, since 2010. Holla if you witnessed it too.
In the first year of its launch, the title of the most-liked photo on Instagram was given to none other than the creator of the app himself, Kevin Systrom. Kevin shared a photo of his pet dog while he was in Mexico, standing next to a taco stand. The photo received 120,000 likes. And don’t we all just love a good puppy photo?
The next year, the title moved to a celebrity and no, it wasn’t Kim Kardashian. Justin Bieber – who is one of the most popular celebrities in the world – took the title home as he shared a photo of himself with his family. Justin posted a picture of his father, Jeremy along with his toddler siblings, Jaxon and Jazmyn. The four boys seemed to be having quite a laugh in the picture, which received about 270,000 likes.
Much like Instagram, 2010 also gave birth to one of the biggest boy bands of the decade. And you guessed it right. It’s One Direction. Garnering a huge fan following across the world, the members Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Louis Tomilson, Niall Horan and Liam Payne were a heartthrob for teenage girls everywhere. And while the band has broken up now, they were still a thing back in 2012, and this photo posted by them featuring Louis and Zayn broke the app’s record that year. With 1,187,174 likes, the picture became the most-liked photo on Instagram that year.
Justin Bieber didn’t only have the most-liked photo in 2011. Two years later, the pop singer garnered the most number of likes with 1.5 million. But what was it this time? Well if you’re posing next to one of the living legends of Hollywood, the Fresh Prince of Bel Air, none other than Will Smith – then it’s unfair if the photo does not get an enough number of likes. The photo shows Justin dressed in a white T-shirt, a cap and a golden chain along with Will as the two look like they’ve spent a casual afternoon together. Now wouldn’t all of us want a chill afternoon with the stars?
Come 2014, one of the biggest weddings on the decade. And yes, social media sensation Kim Kardashian finally landed herself in the list – also becoming the first of the Kardashian-Jenner clan to have the most-liked photo on Instagram. In 2014, Kim married singer Kanye West in a beautiful Italian wedding ceremony. It became the most-liked photo of the year, as the two made their vows to each other and sealed it with a kiss. The photo earned 2.4 million likes on Instagram.
Right after Kim’s wedding photo, it was time for another one from the lot to take the title next year. Supermodel Kendall Jenner’s iconic photo of laying down in a white dress as her hair was artfully placed in hearts took the app by a storm. Kendall not only earned about 2.5 million likes on Instagram but also managed to pull it off in a matter of just five weeks. Yep! It is still one of the best Instagram photos till date.
Half a decade later and the photos keep getting better and bigger. Selena Gomez finally made it to the list of the most-liked photos on Instagram. The singer shared a close up photo of herself sipping on some good old, classic glass bottle of Coca-Cola. In 2016, the singer’s photo earned about 5.9 million likes. Who knew taking a photo while sipping on Coke could land you amongst the most-liked photos on the app? The more you learn…
Now this is the one everyone had been waiting for – Queen Bee, finally took over the title. In 2017, Beyoncé broke the internet when she announced that she and her husband, JAY-Z, were having twins. Yep! The singer cradled belly along with a green veil as she was surrounded by nature and announced her pregnancy. The picture received 11.1 million likes that year and became the most-liked photo of the year.
One more from the Kardashian-Jenner clan makes it to the list. In 2018, lip kit Queen, Kylie Jenner earned the title of the most-liked photo on Instagram as she introduced her daughter, Stormi to the world. The picture earned about a whopping 14 million likes on Instagram knocking Beyonce out of last year’s spot.
We were as surprised at this one as you are. This year, it wasn’t a celebrity or a founder or a social media star that took the title home – it was an egg. Just an egg named World Record Egg. The photo broke all records and received 52 million likes, holding not only 2019’s record of the most-liked photo on Instagram but also of all time. Beat that Kardashians!
