Not so very long ago, Katrina Kaif turned up on the Indian movie scene, bringing in a new wave of beauty standards to Bollywood. Her dizzying ascent to stardom can easily be credited to her killer work ethic, a sense of humour, and humility— qualities you only identify in her once you get the chance to meet her.
I say that, because I sat in the Splash Fashion office, waiting for my turn to interview the face of the brand, I kept replaying all the interviews I have ready and seen of hers in my head, trying to decode what she may or may not be like… Her reservations about her personal life, about relationships on-screen and off, can label her as borderline arrogant. But she is quick to dispel these presumptions in the next six minutes.
We know much (and a little too much) about her personal life that always keeps her in the news. But as a fashion and beauty editor, I have always been intrigued by her steady growth and evolution as a style icon. Ever since Katrina hit the Bollywood circuit in 2003, fashion editors and audeinces alike, have been smitten. She’s trendy but not flashy, chic but effortlessly so. Her red-carpet looks, fashion week appearances and movie costumes turned Kaif into a pop cultural icon. It’s one of the many, many reasons I think she gives #goals for body confidence. Who can forget her washboard abs in Kaala Chashma that became the anthem of 2016? As I get a chance to sit with her, I focus my attention to finding out, what it takes to look like, and be Katrina.
As I enter the conference room along with Splash Fashions CEO Raza Beig, Katrina sits elegantly dressed in a black jumpsuit with floral detailing; asking our team if we’re okay and if we needed any refreshments. This is a woman, whom every designer wants to dress and every director wants to cast, yet she’s so humble and puts us instantly at ease.
I ask her how she feels being back in Dubai. She says, “I feel very much at home. I have a lot of memories associated with this city.” She’s in town to walk the runway for Splash at Mall Of Emirates. One can only imagine the mayhem that she can cause, turning up at a very busy mall. But she is up to the task and excited to interact with audience. She’s also very comfortable with being back on the catwalk because as a part of the job, she does stay close to her modelling roots, with magazine cover shoots, runway appearances and music videos!
I then ask her the question that everyone at Masala! HQ wanted an answer for: her insanely toned physique. How does she do it? When I ask her about how she feels about her role as being “fitspiration” for women around the world, she says, “The first thing I would like to say, though it sounds contradictory, is I don’t think you should chase fitness to the level like I have done in the past. You know, fitness should be enjoyable. It shouldn’t be about chasing that particular image. Find the exercise that makes you feel good.” She also has a message for young girls who look at her as a role model: “You just got to know who you are. It’s okay to feel the pressure. Just find what suits you and what you are comfortable in.”

Claiming one of the most enviable and svelte figures in the industry, Katrina’s fitness is the outcome of intense workouts.
“I think Pilates is amazing. Obviously fifty percent is your diet and fifty percent is your exercise. But, I think gentle exercises, focussing on building muscles, are always better.”

STEAL HER LOOK:
Katrina is one of the few women in Bollywood who can look flawless with or without makeup. She’s a fan of “making up” and claims that, “If I am not shooting then I just don’t wear makeup. But I am very good at doing my own makeup. The look is very natural, almost like second skin.” But for those who are not blessed with natural good looks, here’s what you can do get it.
