Kareena Kapoor Khan has been working in the Hindi film stories for more than nineteen years now. She started her career with ‘Refugee’ starring opposite Abhishek Bachhan and has never looked back since then. However, she became popular with her role ‘Poo’ in Karan Johar’s ‘Kubhi Khushi Kubhi Ghum.’ This was the time when Kareena Kapoor’s stardom took a steep upward flight. All her films have probably not done the best at the box-office but her stardom has never been affected by then.
Coming from the illustrious Kapoor family
Kareena Kapoor Khan comes from the illustrious Kapoor family which has been in Bollywood for four generations now. Starting from her great grandfather Prithvi Raj Kapoor to Karisma, Kareena and cousin Ranbir Kapoor, the Kapoor clan has produced some major superstars. Although Kapoor men have always been in the film business, it was not considered appropriate for the girls to be in the film industry. Probably that was the reason that the actresses who got married in this family stopped working after marriage. Karisma Kapoor’s entry in Bollywood paved the way for her younger sister Kareena to pursue her long dream of becoming a Bollywood actress.
Kareena Kapoor Khan was a star since childhood
As a child, Kareena Kapoor Khan was greatly attached to her grandfather the legendary actor Raj Kapoor. People who have seen Kareena Kapoor Khan as a child say that she was always a star. Her focus was always strong. She would visit her sister Karisma Kapoor on sets and tell her co-actors that one day she would be starring opposite them. At that time, people would laugh at her innocence but Kareena Kapoor meants every word she said.
Kareena Kapoor of yesteryears was never diplomatic
They say that Kareena’s character ‘Poo’ in ‘Kubhi Khushi Kubhi Ghum’ is close to her real life. Her famous dialogue ‘Mei apni favorite hoon’ (I am my own favorite) is said to sum up her personality in a nutshell. Kareena Kapoor Khan is a strong supporter of self-love and often talks about it. It is a well-known fact that Kareena Kapoor Khan has mellowed down with time especially since marrying Saif Ali Khan.
Some of Kareena Kapoor Khan’s controversial statements about her co-stars in the past
However, she was not always diplomatic. Kareena Kapoor Khan always spoke her mind and at times had some upsetting things to say about her co-actresses.
‘There is no point in comparing me to Aishwarya, we're from two different generations.’
Kareena Kapoor Khan won critical acclaim after her intense acting in Madhur Bhandarkar’s film ‘Heroine’ which depicted the inside of the film industry. This film was allegedly offered to Aishwariya Rai first who could not complete it because of her pregnancy. When the comparison was made, Kareena said,
‘We are from two different generations.’
‘Preity Zinta is nowhere in competition with me.’
Preity Zinta and Kareena Kapoor Khan come from the same generation of actresses. Comparison and competition were natural. Preity Zinta once spoke about Nepotism and how star kids get better chances to excel in Bollywood.
When Kareena was asked her view on Preity Zinta’s comments, she said,
‘She said something about me and I retaliated. There was probably some misunderstanding which she wasn't interested in clearing up. That's fine by me because she's nowhere in competition with me.’
This created a huge stir in the cup because both the actresses were considered a competition. The exchange of bitter words was talk of the town.
‘Sonakshi Sinha would make a good housewife’
Karan Johar’s famous show ‘Koffee with Karan’ has created the food for many gossips in Bollywood. In their candid mood, the guests end up saying things about their co-actors which do not sit well with them. In a question about alternate career choice for Sonakshi Sinha, Kareena Kapoor Khan replied,
‘Sonakshi would make a good housewife.’
This did not go well with Sonakshi Sinha. In another episode of Koffee with Karan, Shahid Kapoor defended Sonakhsi saying, ‘She is more than a housewife.’
A ‘black cat’ fight with Bipasha Basu
The two worked in the film ‘Ajnabee’ together. They had a fight over their respective costumes which ended up in Kareena Kapoor Khan calling her ‘black cat.’
‘John Abraham is expressionless’
Kareena and Bipasha’s fight did not end here and further prolonged when Kareena Kapoor Khan also called Bipasha Basu’s then boyfriend John Abraham expressionless and said she would never work with him.
However, they buried the hatchet after six years when Kareena and Saif had dinner with John Abraham.
‘Ameesha just does not look beautiful’
Hrithik Roshan’s debut film ‘Kaho Na Pyaar Hai’ was first offered to Kareena Kapoor who chose not to do it. However, when Ameesha Patel received Zee Cine Award for Best Female Debut Kareena Kapoor was just not pleased. She commented, ‘She (Ameesha) just doesn't look beautiful.’
The same time Kareena Kapoor won ‘Face of the Year’ award and she was not pleased.
‘Where did Priyanka Chopra get her accent from?’
This was one of the most major controversies made in Koffee with Karan. The host Karan Johar asked Kareena Kapoor a question she had for Priyanka Chopra. To this Kareena replied, ‘Where does she get her accent from?’
Priyanka Chopra, in another episode, replied back in the same coin saying,
‘The same place where her boyfriend (Saif) gets it from.’
However, the two get along well together. They were spotted together in ‘Koffee with Karan’ and had a good time together.
Kareena Kapoor Khan 'gave’ Ram Leela to Deepika Padukone
Kareena Kapoor Khan has worked with almost all big directors except Sanjay Leela Bhansali. Ram Leela was initially offered to Kareena which she did not do. When she was asked to comment after the film became a hit, Kareena Kapoor Khan said, ‘I've worked with some really good directors. I've missed the chance to work with Sanjay Leela Bhansali. But there's always a next time. I'm the only actress who can boast of giving films to other actresses.’
Although Kareena Kapoor Khan did not have the best things to say for her co-actors and actresses in the past, she is a changed person now. Her interviews are still candid but carefully worded. Probably, she got this wisdom from her husband Saif Ali Khan and experience. She often praises her contemporaries publicly now. Kareena Kapoor Khan has surely grown and evolved over time. The old fights are a thing of the past.
