Kalank’s Box Office Performance: How Much Money Will Dharma Lose?
Kalank’s box office collections continue to be abysmal. How much money will Karan Johar lose?
Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions will lose no money over Kalank. The financial liabilities are all likely to be absorbed by Dharma’s production partner Fox Star Studios. According to Box Office India, "Kalank had a big drop on its second Friday with collections being just 60 lakhs nett as the rejection coupled with the release Avengers: Endgame meant just a one week run for the film with limited screenings in week two." The film was Yash Johar's idea and Karan Johar's magnum opus that took many months and hundreds of crew members to creat. "The film will finish a little under the 80 crore nett mark for its lifetime business," said the trade website.
Says a source in the know, “Fox released Kalank on a commission basis, hence all the losses will be borne by them. Karan Johar has lost nothing over Kalank, except maybe some sleep.”
The source says Fox Star Studios will lose more than 50 crore rupees over Kalank.
Most immediately affected will be the next Dharma-Fox collaboration Student of the Year 2. This coming-of-age flick is the sequel to the successful Student of the Year. The sequel stars Tiger Shroff and newcomers Tara Sutaria and Ananya Panday and it opens on 10 May. There is likely to be some re-negotiation between Karan Johar and Fox Star over the financial arrangement of Student of the Year.
A source says Fox may ask Dharma to adjust at least some of the financial loss from Kalank in Student of the Year 2. In the unimaginable event of SOTY 2 also not doing well, the future joint ventures of Fox and Dharma may suffer a setback.
