'Kalank' Trailer Review: Karan Johar's New Film Sees Alia Bhatt and Varun Dhawan Shine

The trailer of 'Kalank', Karan Johar's beloved project, has finally been unveiled. Alia Bhatt and Varun Dhawan are stealing the limelight with Madhuri Dixit and Sanjay Dutt are barely seen in guest roles

Karan Johar's passion project, Kalank’s full and final trailer just appeared online. The mega-starrer film sees Alia Bhatt and Sonakshi Sinha in gorgeous avatars. Varun Dhawan is clearly the hero of the film and surprisingly it’s Madhuri Dixit and Sanjay Dutt who are seen in a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it appearance.

While it is hoped that in real the film has more of Sanjay Dutt and Madhuri Dixit, the trailer shows that the film is all about Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt’s romance. There is a lot of allusion to a dark and grand sense of romance as borrowed from Sanjay Leela Bhansali. There also seem to be a borrowed take from Aditya Chopra’s Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge, as the trailer ends with Alia Bhatt falling out of the train to hold Varun Dhawan’s hand. But as the anti-climactic moment spurns, Aditya Roy Chopra pulls her back. Will she or won’t she?

Kalank was originally meant for Shah Rukh Khan as Zafar and Sri Devi in Madhuri Dixit’s role but as time and circumstance didn’t allow that, the new cast and crew was lined up with Varun and Alia. The film is, as Karan Johar has said, Yash Johar’s dream and project.

Understandably so, the film looks nothing like Karan Johar’s films. Even though there are colourful sets, dancing troupes and a theatrical feel-good happy song that the hero sings with his community which is very classic Karan Johar, the overall ambience of the film is very unlike Karan Johar’s happy, shiny aesthetic.
