Set in the pre-partitioned Lahore, Kalank is the story of star-cross'd lovers and hate-filled relationships that are filmed in gorgeous backgrounds and luscious clothing. After riding high on favourable advertising and public relations, the Bollywood multi-starrer Kalank had the biggest opening of 2019.
With such a grand opening, it also created a few other records, they are: Kalank is the biggest box office opener of 2019. Kalank is also Varun Dhawan’s biggest box office opener till date, eclipsing Dilwale. The film is also Alia Bhatt’s biggest opener after overtaking Gully Boy. Kalank also clocked the biggest day one box office collection for a Varun-Alia film. They have worked in four films together till date.
But with such great news from the first day, came the shocking news on the second day. Kalankn collections fell 50% due to bad word-of-mouth from the audience.
Film collections expert Taran Adarsh confimed the fall in collections.
#Kalank has a fall on Day 2... A decline was on the cards, but the drop is much higher than expected... Will be interesting to see how it fares on Day 3 [#GoodFriday]... Wed 21.60 cr, Thu 11.45 cr. Total: ₹ 33.05 cr. India biz.— taran adarsh (@taran_adarsh) April 19, 2019
A BoxofficeIndia report claimed said that this takes the film’s total earnings to approximately Rs 43 crore. The report added that Kalank has made fair collections in metros such as Mumbai and the Andhra Pradesh and Mysore regions, but it is not performing as well as expected in the Hindi belt, including East Punjab.
The see-saw situation in the film's collections is being attributed to the unrealistic plot and the film being too long to accommodate all the characters.
All eyes are on the today's and Sunday's collections to see if the film can race past the Rs. 100 crore mark. Taran tweeted that the film is doing well in the international markets.
