Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker has received an overwhelming response at the global box office. It has already earned more than $200 million since its release on 4th October 2019 and has broken several box office records. The film, which tells the origin story of the iconic villain from Batman’s universe, is being praised for the lead actor’s powerful performance. At the same time, the film has received its share of criticism with many concerned over its depiction of mental illness and mass violence. Fans of Heath Ledger’s performance, as Joker in Batman: The Dark Knight, have also been comparing the two films and the actors’ performances. Twitterati have come up with several hilarious memes, adding humour to the discussions surrounding the film.

A scene from the film -- where Joaquin as Joker is seen staring out of a police car -- has become the inspiration for the Internet’s top meme these days. The Todd Phillip film had references to Taxi Driver, The King of Comedy, and The Dark Knight. A Twitter user, Kevin J.‏ (@__greys) pointed this out, placing the picture of Joaquin’s Joker next to the one from The Dark Knight. He wrote, “For those who didn’t catch the reference”, assuming that others did not get this.

Other Twitter users responded to him by making fun of his post, comparing the Joker scene to different movies, with some hilarious memes now circulating on social media. Quoi‏ (@VicBossFaalGein) wrote the following response, “In Joker (2019, directed by Todd Phillips), we see the main character Arthur dye his hair green. This is a subtle nod to the Character called Joker from the series of Indie comics called Batman. Further connections to the comic character have not been found.” Stacie Rose (@FLPatriotMom07) replied to this saying she thought “the Joker dying his hair green was a nod / reference to the Hulk.” Check out some of the best memes here.
