Majid Majidi’s Beyond The Clouds which launched the career of the super-talented Ishaan Khatter will now be going to China, the new paradise of Bollywood’s money-earning aspirations.
On its release last year, Beyond The Clouds had underperformed at the Indian box office. But Ishaan feels China would welcome this film about a young man from the Mumbai slums fighting for his and his sister’s survival with dignity. The story was about a young man who is a drug mule, trying to survive in abject poverty. He meets various characters that challenge his own concepts of survival. The film was also screened at Dubai International Film Festival in 2017 where Majid Majidi also made an appearance.
It received mixed reactions from critics. Critic Anupama Chopra from Film Companion said that A. R. Rahman’s soundtrack "further underlines every note" and that "subtlety is not this film’s strong point" whereas film critic and journalist Rajeev Masand agreed that the score by A. R. Rahman "is a very familiar one."
Says Ishaan, “I am very excited and hopeful about it. I am curious to see how the population of China reacts to this survivalist drama. This is a film on the theme of humanism. Hopefully, the universality of the emotions will connect with the audience.”
Ishaan is quick to point out that Indian films are doing exceedingly well in China, what with the Aamir Khan starrer Dangal and Sriram Raghavan’s Andhadhun breaking records in that rapidly mutating part of the world.
“Our films are doing incredibly well in China, so there’s a lot to be hopeful about,” Ishaan has his fingers crossed.
