International Women’s Day each year is celebrated with a lot of gusto and fervour. This year we have decided to honour the top five female directors in Bollywood who have made a mark on the industry.

1. Zoya Akhtar

Zoya Akhtar definitely broke the glass ceiling with Gully Boy. Her earlier films Luck By Chance, Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara and Dil Dhadakne Do were also well-received but with Gully Boy a lot of critics have said that she's one of the finest filmmakers around.

2. Reema Kagti

Reema Kagti is often Zoya Akhtar's collaborator but on her own Reema Kagti directed Honeymoon Travels, Talaash and Gold. She received critical acclaim and her films also met with box office success.

3. Gauri Shinde

Gauri directed English Vinglish, Sri Devi’s most memorable films and later Dear Zindagi with Alia Bhatt and Shah Rukh Khan. Both films met with universal acclaim. She also won various awards for her work in aforementioned films.

4. Konkona Sen Sharma

Even though Konkona Sen Sharma is mostly known as an actress, she has directed films such as Naamkoron, a Bengali film, A Death in the Gunj for which she was nominated in various awards and Haseen Tu Haseen Din. This is one multi-talented director who must be celebrated for her works!

5. Kangana Ranaut

Known for her vocal stances on various issues, Kangana has directed Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi. She has also been known to direct and produce a short film called The Touch.
