Ace director Deepa Mehta, who created ripples in the film industry with her bold films Fire, Earth and Water is set to hit the small screens with the web-series, Leila. Backed by streaming giant Netflix, Leila will see actress Huma Qureshi in the lead role. The story is set in a dystopian world where there is a totalitarian regime and a mother is in search of her missing daughter. The series is based on the eponymous novel Leila by Prayaag Akbar.
The story is set in the future where a woman marries a man of another religion. The couple have a daughter who goes missing. The world is set in a time where every person is ghettoed according to his caste, religion and income. Her husband, dies, but the woman does not give up on searching her daughter, even 16 years after her disappearance. Huma Qureshi, is joined by Siddharth, Rahul Khanna, Sanjay Suri and Arif Zakaria in the show.
Huma Qureshi, in one of her interviews said that Leila, is unlike any of her previous works. Her role of a mother in search of her daughter, will resonate with a lot of women and that the show is full of strength, emotions and overcoming obstacles. Huma had shared a tweet about the show.
Deepa Mehta, in a statement said that the film not just talks about a woman in search of her daughter but also of paying attention to the world around us, finding our identities and answering pertinent questions. The show will be available on Netflix from 14th June, 2019.
