The Siddharth Anand directorial War, starring Hrithik Roshan and Tiger Shroff as rivals, released on October 2 and started with a successful run at the box office. The high-octane action thriller raked in an impressive INR50 crore on its opening day and became the biggest Hindi opener of 2019. The only project that overtook War until its opening day was Avengers: Endgame which collected INR53 crore on the day it released in cinemas. A day after its release, the film was leaked for free streaming and download by the torrent site Tamilrockers. Following this, War’s day two collection dropped by nearly 55% to 60%. Its earnings stood at approximately INR23 crore on the second day, primarily due to it being a weekday.

However, trade experts called it a normal drop for a mass film, which was released on national holiday Gandhi Jayanti –  Mahatama Gandhi’s 150th birth anniversary. Film critic Taran Adarsh shared on Twitter, “War is super-strong on Day 2 [working day], after the national holiday on Day 1 [#GandhiJayanti]… Collecting ₹ 20 cr+ on a working day – which happens to be Day 2 in this case – is a rarity… An achievement, since most biggies don’t score ₹ 20 cr on Day 1.” He added, He added, “#War #Hindi: Wed 51.60 cr, Thu 23.10 cr. Total: ₹ 74.70 cr. #Tamil + #Telugu: Wed 1.75 cr, Thu 1.25 cr. Total: ₹ 3 cr.Total: ₹ 77.70 cr #India biz. #War should gather momentum on Day 4 [Sat] and 5 [Sun], thus packing a superb total in its *extended* weekend.”

War released across more than 4000 screens. It has smashed several records since its release becoming the highest Hindi opener of 2019, the highest opener on a national holiday and it's the biggest opener of both Hrithik and Tiger. The film is the two action stars’ first collaboration on the silver screen. Hrithik and Anand’s previous film, Bang Bang opened to INR27 crore, while Tiger’s Baaghi 2 fared fairly decent at INR25 crore on its release day. According to trade experts, War could have collected INR55 crore on its first day if there was no competition from other releases like Joker and Sye Raa Narsimha Reddy. While Joker collected INR5.7 crore on Sunday, Sye Raa (Hindi version) managed INR1.5 crore.
