As a first for any actress, Deepika Padukone's Foundation, The Live Love Laugh Foundation (TLLLF), has started to engage itself in research about mental health in India. This is a first as all Bollywood actors usually choose to do social service or provide financial assistance to those in need. But never before has a Bollywood actor funded a research project. Deepika has funded an entire research paper to know more about mental health perceptions in India.
The findings are amazing. Here's a snapshot of some of the findings:
The survey revealed high prevalence of stigma with 47% of people using the word “retard” to describe people with mental illness. Further, 60% of respondents believe that people with mental illness “should have their own groups to avoid contaminating healthy people” and 68% believe that they “should not be given any responsibility.” 60% believe that mental illness is caused by a “lack of self-discipline and willpower”.
