How Bajirao Mastani Left Dilwale Behind

The verdict is out: Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s saga has inched ahead of Rohit Shetty’s entertainer

This was the competition the industry was awaiting with bated breath for. And two weeks after the release, it looks like the phrase ‘slow and steady wins the race’ has held true for Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Bajirao Mastani. In the big box office battle, Rohit Shetty’s Shah Rukh Khan-Kajol-Varun Dhawan starrer Dilwale was believed to have the upper hand. Initially, it looked likeDilwale would be the winner considering the earth shattering opening it received. But 15 days on, the picture is completely different. Trade sources say, Bajirao Mastani has collected a total of INR 145.86 crores while Dilwale has earned INR 130.12 crores.

Everyone had expected Dilwale to become a cult movie with the teaming up of Shah Rukh and Kajol and with magician Rohit Shetty helming the project. It was believed Bajirao…may not appeal too much because of its intense subject and genre – a historical romance. Somehow, the negative reviews that Dilwale garnered proved to be its undoing. The breath-taking action sequences, colourful songs and SRK-Kajol chemistry could not compensate for the lack of a coherent storyline.

Bajirao Mastani, on the other hand, benefitted greatly from word-of-mouth publicity. The music, grandeur and superb performances were much-discussed on social media and otherwise. Trade analysts said the real test for both movies, which released on the same day, would come after the initial weekend when the content takes over from the hype. As Dilwale’scollections saw a dip, Bajirao… rose steadily on the charts.

By the end of this week, Dilwale may collect a total of INR 140-145 crores while Bajirao… may go further up. Will Akshay Kumar’s Airlift, scheduled to release soon, makes a dent in the collections of both movies remains to be seen.
