Many trade experts were aghast when in 2018 John Abraham decided to take on Akshay Kumar on Akshay’s turf: the Independence day weekend. The clash between John Abraham’s Satyamev Jayate and Akshay Kumar’s Gold on August 15, 2018 proved providentially propitious for John. Satyamev Jayate marched ahead of Gold which was a semi-hit.
Emboldened, John has repeated the 2018 pattern in 2019, unfortunately this time with less favourable results. Akshay Kumar’s Independence Day release Mission Mangal, starring him with Vidya Balan, Taapsee Pannu, Nithya Menen, Kriti Kulhari and Sonakshi Sinha has raced far ahead of John Abraham’s Batla House at the box office.
According to Box Office India, Mission Mangal collected nearly INR 45 crores on the first two days of release while Batla House collected only INR 22 crores in two days, and a steep drop was also registered in the Batla collections. It has to be noted here that Mission Mangal was extensively promoted and the presence of the actresses lent it a big advantage.
Also, Akshay Kumar has made a name for himself as a superstar who delivers cinema with a solid social message. In comparison to Batla House, Mission Mangal had a lighter treatment and the reviews were positive too. However, now Akshay will take a break from his patriotic sagas as his next release, Housefull 4 will be an out-and-out timepass entertainer. “With absolutely no message, no statement, no connection with reality,” warns Akshay.
Meanwhile, John will perhaps think twice about clashing with Akshay on Independence or Republic Day.
