Did you know Billie Eilish is a ‘nepo baby’? But does the label hold for her?

The term nepo baby has become the internet’s favorite scarlet letter, tossed at celebrity kids with varying degrees of fairness. In this pop culture court of public opinion, even Billie Eilish hasn’t escaped judgment. But does the label really stick?

Do you know who Billie Eilish’s parents are?

At first glance, the answer seems simple: Billie’s parents, Maggie Baird and Patrick O’Connell, are actors. Her brother and closest collaborator, Finneas, is a Grammy-winning producer. Case closed, right? Not quite.

Unlike the children of A-list dynasties who are born into red carpets and record deals, Billie’s upbringing was far from star-studded. Her parents were working-class actors, more familiar with the audition grind than VIP lounges. Maggie once admitted she took a small role on Friends just to keep her health insurance. Patrick juggled construction gigs to keep the family afloat. Their Hollywood connection was more postcode than privilege.

In interviews, Finneas has been candid about the realities of their early lives. The Eilish household was creative, but it wasn’t surviving on connections. When Ocean Eyes was first uploaded to SoundCloud, it wasn’t a favour from an industry contact that made it viral. It was purly the music.

Still, the privilege conversation isn’t black and white. Billie’s parents were artists. She had access to instruments, time, and support, luxuries many don’t get. And while that doesn’t amount to nepotism in the traditional sense, it does count as a form of creative capital.

But lumping Billie in with legacy babies whose careers were practically prewritten undermines the grit and talent it took for her to become a global phenomenon by 18. Her rise wasn’t handed to he. It was built in a bedroom studio, brick by brick, with her brother.

Even Maggie Baird has addressed the “nepo baby” claims, calling them “hilarious,” pointing out that her family had no connections in the music industry and that both Billie and Finneas had to navigate the noise on their own.
