An Herms bag is what every girl dreams of and aspires to and sometimes more than jewellery too. The line is inspired by the iconic features of the Kelly, the Birkin, and other accessories that regularly make up the ultimate wish list. Well you luckily no longer have to choose between your dream bag and jewellery - you can have them both! The French luxury house announced the launch of their Haute Bijouterie collection which was created by none other than Pierre Hardy, Hermes artistic director and shoe designer and 'Masala!' was there to take a peek into the decadent and stunning collection. As we arrived at the swish Armani Hotel at the Burj Khalifa, we made our way to the 3rd floor and began our magical journey meandering through completely black-walled walkways admiring the gorgeous jewellery interspersed along the way. Talk about eye candy!
Among the collection highlights are several Kelly bracelets crafted with precious metals and gems, and fastened with the famous flat lock of the Kelly bag (which was named for Princess Grace of Monaco). But it is Hardy's latest collection, Niloticus which is inspired by the crocodile skin that is such an important element of Herms' own heritage (hence the name, Niloticus, which refers to a crocodile indigenous to the Nile river). Made in rose gold, the pieces recreate the scales of a crocodile while the use of rose gold evokes the effect of natural skin and mesh-like malleability, they truly feel like a second skin.
Pierre Hardy has been designing its shoes for about 20 years – but making jewellery was new to him: "I discovered jewellery quite late, by chance, and it was a gift, in a way, but a very exciting challenge. From the beginning, the idea was not to do what Place Vendme does, which is very beautiful because they are haute joaillerie houses. Herms is not. Herms is a generalist and we are doing home, horses, fashion, perfumes, jewelsThe idea was to find the real identity for that and not to try to be a mock-up of something else. So it has been pushed more into the design, and the shape and the treatment of the material, like gold and silver. It was really based on the treatment of the materials and not only on finding a marvellous unique stone and then building something around it. It's not just showing the stone as a natural beauty. Herms is more about the process of making something into a beautiful object."
