Today marks the 70th birthday of His Royal Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Vice President of the United Arab Emirates and Ruler of the Emirate of Dubai. The ruler is the third son of previous Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE, as well as Ruler of Dubai, Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum, who ruled from 1958 until his death in 1990, making his reign over 30 years. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid’s mother was Sheikha Latifa bint Hamdan Al Nahyan.
Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid is renowned for his incentives and dedication towards reforming the government of the UAE and seeking out new ways to further put the country on the global map. He has played an integral role in forming the UAE's vision to "be among the best countries in the world by 2021." In the published full text, which was released in 2010, that described the UAE cabinet's vision, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum penned the moving and inspiring preface. In the preface, the leader wrote, "An ambitious nation like ours cannot achieve its goals by relying on its past achievements. We must work harder, be more innovative, more organised, and more vigilant in examining the trends and challenges that will face us," showing his passion in bettering the country and having it move forward.
But the ruler is known for more than just his political responsibilities and ambitions. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum is also an established poet and often posts his writings to his Instagram and official website. His poems, which feature in Arabic and Nabati (also known as "the people's poetry" or "Bedouin poetry"), focus on a range of themes, from religion to nature to family and love. With the Sheikh's various achievements and talents that go from anywhere from the arts, athletics and philanthropy, he has made a special place for himself in every Dubaiite’s heart.
