Happy Birthday to Aamir Hussain Khan who turns 54 today! Aamir Khan has established himself in the Hindi film industry not only as an iconic actor but also as a producer, entrepreneur, talk show host and someone who dares to think outside box. Here are all the times he has proven that he is a gamechanger.
1. Establishing Aamir Khan Productions: Lagaan, Taare Zameen Par, Secret Superstar
Aamir Khan productions was established in 1999 which produced iconic films. Lagaan was nominated for the Best Foreign Language Film at the Oscars. Taare Zameen Par was one of the first films that talked about dyslexia and the constant pressure in children who are struggling with neurodiversity. Secret Superstar was also another film that was a ‘different’ story but was a commercial hit. With these films, Aamir proved that it is possible to combine commercial and critical acclaim and not rely on horrible stereotypes to sell films!
2. Talk Show Host on Satyamev Jayate
As the talk show host on Satyamev Jayate, Aamir has hosted and worked on bringing awareness to many causes such as child sexual abuse and has invited on his show women like Deepika Padukone, Parineeti Chopra and asked them to weigh in about how their job often objectifies them. Aamir even showed a montage of his own clips from Bollywood films which showed harmful stereotyping of women.
3. Choosing Scripts like Dil Chahta Hai, 3 Idiots, PK and Dangal
Aamir has always been a risk-taker when it comes to scripts. Dil Chahta Hai was Farhan Akhtar’s directorial debut and he was one of the leading cast of a film that was completely different from what Bollywood was producing at the time. (Dil Chahta Hai releasead in the early 2000s when most experimental topics were immediately shoved under the category of ‘parallel cinema’.)
4. Honest Interviews!
On Karan Johar’s chat show, Karan asked Aamir why it took him so long to get Aamir on the couch. To which Aamir replies honestly, “Whatever I knew of you Karan, I didn’t like!” Aamir is always known to be very honest and candid in his interviews and doesn’t toe the diplomacy line at all.
5. Social work and Causes
Aamir is a vocal and outspoken feminist and has often campaigned for various social justice causes such as education and nutrition. He has also been a UNICEF brand ambassador to promote child nutrition.
So happy birthday, Aamir! May you live long and prosper!
