While washing your hair may be a mundane task that you perform with minimum effort on a daily basis, you may not know that there is actually a correct way to wash your hair. You may also have wondered why your hair feels so different (read so damn good) when it is washed at the salon. The sole reason for this is because the key to happy, healthy hair is a proper hair washing routine. We conducted lots of research to find out exactly how we should be washing our hair and we tell you exactly how to take your shampoo game to the next level. Follow these tips for happy, healthy, shiny hair.
1. Avoid washing your hair daily
It’s simple; don’t wash your hair every day! "Most young women today wash their hair way too much!" says Anthony Cole, lead stylist for Sebastian Professional Haircare. For most hair types, a wash three times a week is sufficient. If hair is washed too regularly, it will actually produce more oil. So ironically, the best way to actually wash your hair is to not wash it much at all.
2. Use lukewarm water
A hot, steamy shower may be something you look forward to at the end of a long, tiring day. This may actually do more harm than good for your hair. Though there's no exact temperature that's been proven ideal, it is preferable to keep water warm rather than hot. And, just before stepping out of the shower, rinse off with one cool (or even cold!) round of water. This step will help seal your hair cuticles and trap in all the moisture.
3. Choose a shampoo best suited to your hair type
It is important to identify your hair type and choose a formula that is best suited for your hair type. If your hair is oily, consider a purifying shampoo and steer clear of those that are overly-hydrating or moisturizing. If your hair is dry, opt for more smoothing formulas to settle the extra frizz.
4. Towel dry your hair
You may be done in the shower but it’s not over yet. While you may be tempted to use a dryer and styling tools, it is best to let your hair dry naturally or just with a towel. If you really must use heat styling tools, ensure you’re using a heat protectant and never use hot tools until and unless your hair is completely dry.
