Golden Globes 2020: Russell Crowe Highlights Climate Change, Draws Mixed Reaction on Twitter

Russell Crowe won an award for The Loudest Voice. He was not present at the ceremony but shared a statement on Australia’s wildfire crisis

Russell Crowe won Best Actor in a TV series, limited series or TV movie for The Loudest Voice at the Golden Globe Awards held yesterday. However, the actor was not present in Los Angeles but was in Australia, coping with the wildfire crisis unfolding there. He had however sent a statement in case he won the award. Jennifer Aniston, who was presenting the award, read it out for the audience. It said, "Make no mistake the tragedy unfolding in Australia is climate change based. We need to act based on science, move our global workforce to renewable energy and respect our planet for the unique and amazing place it is. That way we all have a future. Thank you."

His statement has drawn some mixed reactions from fans, who took to social media to discuss the role of celebrities in the climate change crisis. Check out some tweets below:

Are we to be lectured about climate change by rich celebrities who use private jets to do press events & attend parties? These self-serving speeches based on 'using their platform responsibly' are so patronising & hypocritical. #goldenglobes2020”
