Golden Globes 2020: Joaquin Phoenix Calls Out Hollywood’s Hypocrisy

Joaquin Phoenix received the Best Actor in a Drama award for his performance in Todd Philips’ Joker

Joker did a record business of more than $1 billion at the worldwide box office, even with an R-rated rating, and actor Joaquin Phoenix’s performance in the movie, where he turns from an ordinary, sick man into the crime king of Gotham deserves all the credit for it. The movie shows the origin of the Batman’s arch-nemesis and how societal ill turns him away from the good path and into the oblivion of darkness forever. Will Phoenix be able to match the grandeur that came with Joker is a relevant question, but his acceptance speech at the Golden Globes for Best Actor in a Drama was as immaculate as his performance in the movie.

The actor gave the producers of the awards a difficult time with his uncensored speech but all the while he touched important points during his address, which many cannot disagree with. "First, I would like to thank the Hollywood Foreign Press for recognising and acknowledging the link between animal agriculture and climate change. It's a bold move to making tonight plant-based and it really sends a powerful message," he said pointing out at the menu at the awards which was all plant based and hence vegan.

He thanked Joker’s director Todd Philips for bearing with him as the shot the movie. “Todd, you were such an amazing friend and collaborator, you convinced me to do this movie. I cannot believe you put up with me,” said Phoenix, trying to tell the audience that he is difficult to work with. He then called out all the celebrities’ for their hypocrisy, saying only wishing people well during a catastrophe, case in point the bushfires in Australia, is not enough. “Contrary to popular belief, I don't want to rock the boat but the boat has been rocked. It's really nice that so many people have come up and sent their wishes to Australia but we have to do more than that, right? It's a beautiful gesture and I've not always been a virtuous man. I'm learning so much and so many of you in this room have given me multiple opportunities to try to get it right. And I'm deeply grateful.”

He continued by saying that not all celebrities should have been taking private jets to the venue of the awards and promised that he will start by doing thing differently from now on. “But I think together hopefully we can be unified and actually make some changes. It's great to vote. Sometimes we have to take that responsibility on ourselves and make changes and sacrifices in our own lives. And hope we can do that. We don't have to take private jets to Palm Springs for the awards and back, please. I'll try to do better and hope you will too.”

Phoenix’s speech was full of abusive words, which the broadcasting network had to censor but Twitter users were not happy with it and said that however awkward the actor’s speech was, it should’ve been shown as is.

“As awkward as the speech was, loved Joaquin Phoenix calling out Hollywood for taking private jets to an award show while ironically always preaching about climate changes,” wrote one Twitter user.

“’It’s really nice that so many people come up and sent their wishes to Australia but we need more than that!’ Well said Joaquin!” another one commented.

“The Vegan King Joaquin Phoenix using his power and platform to speak up for the animals and the planet. This is how it’s done. When you have power is your responsibility to use it in a positive way! Thank you Joaquin Phoenix. I love this man more than ever,” one person tweeted.
