Born in December 1981, Britney Spears rose to success with her first two studio albums Baby One More Time (1999) and Oops! I Did it Again (2000). She became a pop icon at a very young age and has had a rocky bunch of years after that (no pun intended). She has been one of controversy's favorite children and has also struggled with mental illnesses and difficult relationships. Recently, something that has gotten her in the news again is the hashtag '#FreeBritney'. The hashtag was created by her fans who wanted her to be free from her father's guardianship or 'conservatorship' as the legal term should have it.

The Rolling Stone reported that somewhere in late April, "50 Britney Spears fans wielding neon posters bearing the hashtag #FreeBritney gathered outside of West Hollywood City Hall. The collection gathered peacefully, wearing her merchandise, playing her hits and explaining to the news teams on site that they were collectively concerned, specifically about the state of her long-running conservatorship". Conservatorship is a form of legal guardianship in the United States where underage individuals do not have the access or the freedom to commit certain actions and especially take financial decisions. Britney Spears' conservatorship was established by her father James Spears.

A few weeks earlier, Britney posted a video on instagram saying,

"I wanted to say hi, because things that are being said have just gotten out of control!!! Wow!!! There’s rumors, death threats to my family and my team, and just so many things crazy things being said. I am trying to take a moment for myself, but everything that’s happening is just making it harder for me. Don’t believe everything you read and hear. These fake emails everywhere were crafted by Sam Lutfi years ago... I did not write them. He was pretending to be me and communicating with my team with a fake email address. My situation is unique, but I promise I’m doing what’s best at this moment. You may not know this about me, but I am strong, and stand up for what I want! Your love and dedication is amazing, but what I need right now is a little bit of privacy to deal with all the hard things that life is throwing my way. If you could do that, I would be forever grateful. Love you." Miley Cyrus had also commented on the photo with 'We love you so much, Queen'.

She had been in a mental health facility and reportedly did not want to be in it. However her longtime manager Larry Rudolph told TMZ that her medications have stopped working. Her show “Britney: Domination” was also stopped and Rudolph said, “From what I have gathered it’s clear to me she should not be going back to do this Vegas residency, not in the near future and possibly never again.”

The conservatorship controversy gained significant momentum when Britney's fans Tess Barker and Barbara Gray received an anonymous call from someone who was close to the law firms dealing with the conservatorship. Barker and Gray had been suspicious of the legal battle and the source confirmed it. Rolling Stone also reported that for the April episode of Britney’s Gram, the podcast run by the fans, "the actual voicemail was included in the episode along with Barker and Gray’s commentary on the new information and recent developments. The episode has been heard over 85,000 times on SoundCloud." Perez Hilton stated that the two hosts had also been reported to the FBI. As of now, Britney is still under conservatorship and cannot be free from it just yet as the court continues to rule against her. Says TMZ that Britney Spears had "told the judge that her father admitted her to the treatment facility, and forced her to take drugs, against her will". This is going to be a long battle for Britney.
