Science and technology multinational company, Merck KGaA Germany, will be establishing a Sustainability Centre in District 2020 in Dubai South. The centre will be launched during Expo 2020 Dubai, which will open its doors next year on 20th October 2020. The Sustainablity Centre will focus on spearheading programmes which make use of advanced science and technology to come up with sustainable solutions to meet urban challenges. The idea for this centre, which will be focusing on countries of the Global South, came during a meeting last month between the Deputy Ruler of Dubai and First Deputy Chairman of Dubai Executive Council, HH Sheikh Maktoum bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum and Chairman of the Executive Board and CEO of Merck, Dr Stefan Oschmann.
Dr. Rasha Kelej, CEO of Merck Foundation, Dr. Stefan Oschmann, Chairman of Executive Board and CEO of Merck, HH Sheikh Maktoum bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai and First Deputy Chairman of Dubai Executive Council, and HE Reem Al Hashimy, Minister of State for International Cooperation and Director General of Expo 2020 Dubai.
During the meeting, which took place in Dubai, His Highness said, “we are committed to working with those who share our vision of a better world.” In a press statement, Dr Stefan Oschmann has said the centre emphasises his company’s “commitment to broadening our relationships with other innovators, scientists, and entrepreneurs.”
He added, “We at Merck are curious minds dedicated to human progress. This centre will work towards encouraging the knowledge exchange among like-minded individuals, build local capacity with special focus on women and youth, and support startups that have the potential to deliver sustainable solutions with the aim to improve people’s lives through science and technology. With such an emphasis on nurturing innovation and collaboration, District 2020 provides the ideal ecosystem for us to do so. Merck’s presence will help to underline Dubai and the UAE’s vision to continue creating a competitive knowledge economy underpinned by sustainable applications of science and technology.”
Merck Sustainability Centre will concentrate on capacity building via a variety of educational and research-based programmes. To extend its support to young innovators and enable the transition towards a more sustainable world, the centre will provide spaces for collaborative research and development. It will host a start-up incubator which will help nurture the growth of innovative businesses in the field of sustainability and give them access to Merck’s valuable expertise and strong infrastructure.
The centre will also collaborate with local and international stakeholders -- governmental and non-governmental organisations, research and educational institutions, media, community organisations and businesses -- which will also be part of District 2020. In this way, it will be able to benefit from the expertise and ideas related to cutting-edge innovations in several industries such as architecture, automotive, cosmetics, emerging biotechnology, healthcare, government and academic research, and support start-ups developing sustainable solutions, next generation products, etc.
Minister of State for International Cooperation and Director General of Expo 2020 Dubai, Her Excellency Reem Al Hashimy expressed her excitement about District 2020’s collaboration with one of the world’s leading companies in science and technology, and about the plans to make “tangible and measurable impact on people’s lives around the world.”
She said, “This is a testament to the convening power of Expo and an Expo legacy based on technology, innovation and the vast array of opportunities.”
District 2020 Dubai
Expo 2020 site will be retained as District 2020 after the mega event concludes in April 2021. With a diverse ecosystem, it will bring together many industries and will be home to many large and small organisations. Apart from Merck, some of the big companies which have already announced their collaboration with District 2020 include Siemens, Accenture and Shanghai-based Atlas Capital Holding.
Chief Pavilions and Exhibitions Officer Expo 2020, Marjan Faraidooni said they were ‘honoured’ to have Merck as one of the District 2020 tenants as they will “bring an important element to the District’s diverse ecosystem with their innovation-focused sustainability solutions.” She said District 2020 was a suitable venue for Merck Sustainability Centre due to “its prime position geographically and culturally” and “for the collaborative environment and partnership opportunities it will provide.”
