Emmy Awards 2019: Why British Comedy Series Fleabag Has Received 11 Nominations

Emmy Awards 2019 includes 11 nominations for UK comedy series Fleabag, aired on Amazon Prime. Here’s what you need to know about this show.

British comedy series Fleabag first aired on Amazon Prime in July 2016. The second and final season was aired this year in April 2019. The show previously did not receive any nominations in the Emmys but for the Emmy Awards 2019 it has a total of 11 nominations! The series, set in London, has been created by Phoebe Waller-Bridge, who also plays the protagonist Fleabag, a bereaved, confused and angry woman. While the first season was not considered for the Emmys, Phoebe received the British Academy Television Award for Best Female Comedy Performance for it in 2017.

The second season has been able to secure the following Emmy nominations for its actresses: Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Lead Actress), Clifford and Olivia Colman (Supporting Actress), and Kristin Scott Thomas and Fiona Shaw (Guest Actress). Other nominations are for Outstanding Writing, Directing, Casting, Cinematography for a Single-Camera Series (Half-Hour) and Single-Camera Picture Editing.

Brett Gelman, who plays the character of Martin in Fleabag, congratulated Phoebe and team on Instagram saying, “Congrats to everyone who is a part of this extraordinary show. To everyone who helped to realize Phoebe’s genius vision. “

Phoebe Waller-Bridge previously wrote Killing Eve season one and served as the executive producer of the show's second season. She also improved the script for the new James Bond film and is executive producing a comedy for HBO. Her show Fleabag became popular because of its dark humour and has been called the  'filthiest show on television.' One of the unique features of Fleabag is that during the episodes, Phoebe directly addresses the camera (“breaking the fourth wall”), passing remarks on other characters or giving a commentary on what’s going on in her life. The show was initially praised by the critics but had a small fan following, especially in the US, but it has gained popularity over time. However, show creator Phoebe has said that the show has concluded with the second installment and there will be no third season.
