Comedian-host Ellen DeGeneres has been facing backlash since her photos with former US President George W Bush went viral on social media. In the photograph and the live broadcast of the game, the comedian was seen sitting next to the former president at the Dallas Cowboys football game on Sunday, 6th October. People started questioning Ellen’s friendship with George Bush, as she -- a celebrity with liberal views, who is considered an LGBT icon and role model -- holds completely opposing views to the former president, who supports ultra-conservative views on LGBT, women's rights and other issues. Here’s how people have been reacting to the controversy on Twitter:

Chad Benson (@chadbensonshow) posted a picture of the two at the game and predicted a strong reaction, “What kind of s^%t do you think Ellen will get for sitting next to George W Bush at a Cowboys game? #EllenDeGeneres #GeorgeWBush #CancelCulture”

Several people were angry at Ellen’s apparent camaraderie with President Bush. Ian56 (@Ian56789) said, “It's a big Club and you're not in it. Crooks of a feather, flock together. #FakeLiberal Corporate Fascist shill #EllenDeGeneres sits in the owner's box with Mass Murdering War Criminal Psychopath & Traitor #GeorgeBush at tonight's Green Bay vs Dallas Cowboys football game.”

Tassio12 (@Tassio_34) said, “Go away #EllenDeGeneres You’re not that funny. You normalize war criminals. You are the problem. #Fakeliberal”

Nik (@saintnik56), “Can’t even begin to imagine why Ellen would sit next to a former president... unbelievable!! Cancel her!!!! #BoycottEllen!!!”

Some people extended their support to Ellen. Rae The Writer (@WriteAsRae) said, “So...... Michelle Obama’s friendship with GW is endearing but #EllenDeGeneres is not permitted to sit next to him at a football game??????? I’m a Democrat who finds white liberals EXHAUSTING at this point.”

Elizabeth Maiden (@ElizabethManue4) wrote, “I'm not religious, but even Jesus called out the 'generation of vipers' and kicked the money lenders out of the temple. Kindness does not require you to tolerate unrepentant murder and capitalist exploitation, religious, humanist or otherwise. #EllenDeGeneres #GeorgeBush”

David Jacobs (@DrJacobsRad) said, “I would love to see an international nonpartisan day. Everyone could post photos of themselves with friends who have diametrically opposed political views. A free society is defined by the ability to have and discuss different points of view! #EllenDeGeneres”

Preston Carmichael (@harshnhandsome) said, “So Ellen DeGeneres was seen laughing with George W Bush. So we're now at the point in society where two people with different views aren't even allowed to share a laugh with each other over something? Are you serious? Really think about that. Wow. #EllenDeGeneres”

Ellen responded to the widespread criticism on The Ellen DeGeneres Show on Tuesday. She said, "Yes, that was me at the Cowboys game with George W Bush over the weekend. Here's the whole story. Here's the thing: I'm friends with George Bush. In fact, I'm friends with a lot of people who don't share the same beliefs that I have. We're all different and I think that we've forgotten that that's okay that we're all different... but just because I don't agree with someone on everything doesn't mean that I'm not going to be friends with them."

She further added, "People were upset. They thought, why is a LGBT Hollywood liberal sitting next to a conservative Republican president? A lot of people were mad. And they did what people do when they're mad... they tweet."

Several people lauded Ellen’s comments on the show. Ginnie Lee Reid (@GinnieReid) said, “Wonderful message! But, please do not cave to the hate. You're getting bashed on #boycottellen. You have always stood up for what you believed. Stand tall and #WalkAway from hate and intolerance!”

Lauren Bolton (@LaurenBolton3) also defended Ellen, saying, “I know people are not fans of #EllenDeGeneres right now, but how else are you supposed to get people informed, if you cut them off? That's just dumb. We have all these outputs for #communications and demanding that people cut each other off. Doesn't help.”

Jonny L (@JonBlogcentric) tweeted, “#EllenDeGeneres said what she had to. She does not owe a bunch of #Twitterbrats any apologies.”

However, many people were still not happy with her explanation and continued to debate on her friendship with George Bush. Jeff Waldorf (@jeffspolitics) wrote, “Sure you can be friends with conservatives, but I tend to draw the line at war criminals.”

A-Bomb (@bringurownsun) tweeted, “This is why I cannot stand #EllenDeGeneres GWB took our country and the world down a dark path where he LIED in order to kill thousands of Iraqi people. He is not "different" he is a MURDERER who then tortured even more people.”

T D Arkenberg (@Word_Stringer) said, “Sorry Ellen, not buying this! George Bush used his State of the Union address to call for a Constitutional ban on marriages such as the one you enjoy. He used that wedge issue to win in 2004! To call that man friend betrays the LGBT community.” Meanwhile, Conor (@AhJayzis) calling her toxic, said, "I'm friends with a mass murdering bigot because I'm a good person. Killing hundreds of thousands of brown people is just a personality trait I'm a big enough person to accept lol xoxoxox #hugamurderer #heonlyhatespoorlgbtpeople" Toxic. Genuinely toxic.” JohnnyTV (@BroadcastRules) also called her out, “Here’s a thought. It’s easy to forget when you’re wealthy. ‘Kindness’ my ass. You can be civil but not ingratiating. Such a disappointment. I guess she’s not so ‘relatable’ after all.” It seems that the social media controversy on Ellen’s friendship with George Bush will not die any time soon as the online debate continues.
