With Spanish cuisine’s meagre presence in the buzzing Dubai restaurant scene, El Sur is a welcome addition indeed. Transformed from a place that housed Westin’s raucous after-brunch 80s music parties, El Sur is now an art-infused restaurant with stone walls, interesting sculptures, oak wood sharing tables and a cosily furnished terrace area which, despite the lack of view, has a buzzing and cheery ambience. We dove right into the range of appetisers and immediately pounced upon the Jamon and weren’t disappointed with the slivers of decadently flavoured meat. However, the star of the appetiser show was the mushroom and cheese croquetas. Stuffed with a melted and creamy mushroom core, it’s an explosion of gooey flavour you will absolutely love.

Already full with the enormous starter portions (do not make the mistake of ordering more than two at most – this is far from tapas) we nevertheless chose our mains with gusto. The mushroom ravioli rivalled the croquetas. Covered in foam, they were light as a feather on our tongues as well as our stomachs. Dessert was decadent though our aching bellies forbade us from having more than a few bites. The caramelized brioche was comfort food at its best. A variation of the famed La Petit Maison French toast, El Sur’s offering stands its own with panache. We left our Spanish culinary excursion with a smile on our faces that had everything to do with the food and the friendly and knowledgeable all-Spanish staff.
