Indian television and film producer Ekta Kapoor, who is the Joint Managing Director of Balaji Telefilms, has been honoured with 'Most Powerful Business Women of the Year' Award by Fortune India Awards. She is the only woman in the film and entertainment industry to have been honoured at the award ceremony this year. The accolade recognises Ekta’s success with producing popular content for film, television and digital platforms. She recently produced the comedy film Dream Girl, starring Ayushmann Khurana, which emerged as a big blockbuster. Her digital show The Verdict - State vs Nanavati has also gained popularity while her television series Kasauti Zindagi Kay enjoys the highest TRP on Indian television.

Her upcoming film  Dolly Kitty Aur who Chamakte Sitare was screened at the Busan International Film Festival. The filmmaker has also announced her upcoming collaboration with actress Disha Patani, who has started shooting for the film titled KTina.

Fortune India — which ranks the most powerful women in business ‘who are making an impact by virtue of their business acumen and social and cultural influence’ — has placed Ekta on the 22nd position on this prestigious list this year.

Ekta’s profile on the website reads, “Until just two years ago, Kapoor’s name was synonymous with sitcoms on Indian television channels. But, slowly and steadily, she is making her presence felt on India’s formidable video-streaming or over-the-top (OTT) platform.” It further states how her OTT platform ALTBalaji, which was launched in 2017, has managed to secure around 20 million paid subscribers last year and has stayed in the ‘top percentile in a crowded market with more than 30 OTT players’. The platform is more affordable as compared to competitors like Netflix, and focuses on viewers in the smaller cities of India. It is expected to become profitable soon.
