Dubai Taxi: Here’s How the RTA is Ensuring the Safety of Passengers

All Dubai taxis have surveillance cameras which help the RTA monitor the conduct of taxi drivers and address any complaints. Learn more.

The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) in Dubai is always making improvements to the roads and transport system in the emirate, to ensure a smooth and safe journey for people using the roads and RTA’s public transport system, which includes taxis, buses, metro, tram and water taxis. In line with its strategic goal to increase ‘people’s happiness’, RTA recently announced that security cameras had been installed in more than 10,000 Dubai taxis. The official Twitter handle of RTA tweeted, “#DubaiTaxi is now fully fitted with security cameras. 10,684 taxis comprising the entire taxi fleet in Dubai have surveillance cameras to ensure your trips are safe and secure.” This is also part of RTA’s initiatives under Dubai Government’s Smart City initiative.

RTA had earlier shared the news and details of this initiative in October this year, revealing that installation of the system had started in 2017 and had been completed in several phases. A press release, quoting Director of Transportation Systems at RTA’s Public Transport Agency, Khaled Al Awadi, said, “The installation of the system started in August 2017 and continued over phases until the entire fleet of Dubai Taxi had been covered. RTA is keen on introducing state-of-the-art facilities for the comfort, security and satisfaction of clients, which ranks high on RTA’s priorities”

The installation of security cameras is helping RTA closely monitor the conduct of taxi drivers and check whether they are complying with the ethical and professional standards set by RTA. The cameras’ sensors turn on the cameras as soon as a passenger steps into the taxi, and the entire journey is recorded. The camera feed will be examined by RTA if any violations are detected or reported. This initiative aims to help address and reduce complaints by passengers and improve their overall taxi ride experience.
