Dubai Police has solved a murder case by using a new technique. They revealed how a silicone-based casting material technique, used for the first time in this region, had helped them identify a murderer. According to the police, a gang had attacked a victim, who had been found stabbed to death. All members of the gang had been arrested, they said, but it had been difficult to identify which person had carried out the murder. To solve the case, forensic science and criminology experts used the silicone-casting technique on the victim's body.
Forensic Consultant, Dr Khalid Al Breki said, “The victim was attacked by a group of men. He suffered injuries inflicted on him with knives and tools. The investigation team asked us to help them in identifying the main stab injury which caused the death.” He said it had been challenging to use it for the very first time.
By applying silicon, the forensic team was able to figure out the features of the fatal injury and link to the size and shape of the blade. They compared the silicone cast with various blades found at the scene of the murder. After identifying the weapon, they took fingerprints and matched those with the murderer. The technique was used as evidence, after which the suspect was referred to the Dubai Public Prosecution.
Discussing this case and the new technique, Assistant to the Dubai Police Commander-in-Chief for Criminal Investigation Affairs, Major-General Ibrahim Khalil Al Mansouri said, “Using silicon helped identify the man behind the deadly stabbing in the group fight,” He further added, “The force is keen on seeking excellence and innovation in all fields of police work, including forensics and criminology, and on using all resources to uncover cases and identify perpetrators accurately to bring them to justice.”
