Janvhi Kapoor and Ishaan Khatter can breathe a sigh of relief. Their much-talked about film Dhadak is a box office success. The film that released last week to mixed reviews opened very well at the ticket windows and the five day collection shows that it is well on the way to become a huge success.
Trade website Boxofficeindia.com says that the Karan Johar production, directed by Shashank Khaitan collected nearly INR 5.25-5.50 crore on Monday that takes its business to nearly INR 40 crore nett. The official remake of the Marathi superhit Sairat had had a great opening and the collections dropped by 35 % from the first Friday which is considered good for a film like this that had no top stars. Incidentally, Dhadak has become a hit due to the business generated by normal multiplexes and single screens and not the high end multiplexes where ticket prices are higher.
Boxofficeindia.com estibmates that the film will collect INR 52 crore nett and after that, the second Friday (this weekend) will determine its lifetime total and if it crosses the 100 crore mark or not.
Dhadak, which is the story of star-crossed lovers with a caste angle was panned by some critics who said that the film was not true to its original Sairat, which was a searing indictment of caste equations in the country. However, Janhvi Kapoor received a huge thumbs up from the industry for her performance and freshness.
