Ranveer Singh’s Kabir Khan-directed 83, based on India’s triumph in the 1983 cricket World Cup where he plays the legendary Kapil Dev, is one of the most awaited films of the year. Everyone connected with this mega-sports flick knows the focus of interest in the film is Kapil Dev and his triumph at the World Cup. In fact if you look at the line-up of actors playing the cricket team of 1983 only Ranveer Singh is a bankable star in the cast. The others are all actors.
The film doesn’t really have space for a female lead in a major role and for a long time, speculations were on about who would play the actress opposite Ranveer. But surprisingly, real life wife Deepika Padukone was signed on to play Romi Dev, Kapil’s wife for a whopping sum. Deepika, the highest paid female actor in India, surprised everyone by hopping on board for what looks like a boys’ sports film. So why did she do it? It was all for love!
Apparently Ranveer Singh was very keen to have Deepika play his wife in ’83, although, sources confirm, Deepika’s role is no more than an extended cameo. “Romi Dev, Mrs Kapil Dev, is very important in Kapil Dev’s life. But as far as the 1983 Cricket world Cup was concerned, she was hardly a key player, for obvious reasons. The producers wanted to sign a good (even if not so known) actress instead of an A-lister for the wife’s role. But Ranveer Singh convinced, in fact persuaded, the producers to go with Deepika.”
And Deepika has been paid her full market price for 83 — on a par with Ranveer’s remuneration — in spite of her abbreviated role. Undoubtedly, Deepika’s entry into the film has upped the interest levels even more. Fans would be watching the real-life couple for the first time on screen after their marriage. Ranveer and Deepika have done three films together, all with Sanjay Leela Bhansali – Ram Leela, Bajirao Mastani and Padmaavat.
Way to go, Deepika.
