The likes of Deepika Padukone, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Alia Bhatt and Priyanka Chopra churning out some of the biggest blockbusters in Bollywood have proved that women are no less than men. By headlining films that bring in over Rs 100 crore in returns, the girls have defied all gender norms and changed the narrative that only the male actors can pull the crowd. However, this is only the beginning. With a plethora of women-led films scheduled to hit screens in 2020, it will be amazing to see these masterpieces compete at the box office with those that include the male star performers. Curated from The Indian Express, here is a list of several films and the lead stars who will be seen clashing at the box office next year:
1. Deepika Padukone versus Ajay Devgn
Deepika, who is currently producing and playing the lead in her next film, Chhapaak will be going head-to-head with Ajay Devgn's Taanaji. While Chhapaak is inspired by the story of an acid attack survivor, Laxmi Aggarwal, Taanaji will be based on the Maratha warrior Tanaji Malusare, who was a military leader of the Maratha Empire in the 17th century. And it's not only the main leads of the films facing each other at the box office. Director Meghna Gulzar will be in the run alongside Om Raut, who is helming Taanaji and only time will tell which one brings in a larger audience into the cinemas on January 10, 2020.
2. Kangana Ranaut versus Varun Dhawan
Now this is going to be one to watch out for. Varun Dhawan will be seen starring opposite next to Shraddha Kapoor in his next film, Street Dancer, which will be directed by Remo D'souza. However, it's important to release that the third film in the ABCD franchise will be going against Kangana Ranaut's next, Panga. Directed by yet another female filmmaker, Ashwini Iyer Tiwari, Panga will tell the story of a kabbadi player which will be essayed by Kangana. Both, Street Dancer and Panga are sit to hit screens on January 24, 2020.
3. Alia Bhatt versus Akshay Kumar
One of the biggest clashes to look forward to next year will be superstar Akshay Kumar running against Alia Bhatt. Yes, that is 27 years of Bollywood experience against mere seven years in the industry. But that does not mean Alia falls short of anything. The actress has proved her expertise in the craft with films such as Udta Punjab, Highway and Raazi. The interesting twist to this clash? Alia's Inshallah with Salman Khan opposite Akshay's Sooryavanshi with Katrina Kaif will also be bringing Bollywood's most favourite duo - Salman and Katrina - head-to-head with each other. Another added bonus to the competition will be the big names helming the projects.
While Inshallah will be directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Rohit Shetty will be taking care of mattes with Sooryavanshi. Which one will prevail? We'll find out on Eid 2020.
