Deepika Padukone’s highly-anticipated social drama Chhapaak finally hit the screens on Friday, 10th January. Directed by Meghna Gulzar, the film follows the real life story of acid attack survivor Laxmi Agarwal, her pain and eventual victory. It opened with a collection of INR 4.77 crore, playing on 1,700 screens across India. The earnings grew by nearly 50 percent on Saturday, with the film collecting INR 6.9 crore on the second day of its release. Chhapaak is performing as per predictions by trade analysts and is expected to earn around INR 8 crore on Sunday, bringing the total first weekend collection to INR 20 crore.

Film trade analyst Taran Adarsh reported on Twitter, “#Chhapaak witnesses an upward trend on Day 2, but the 2-day total is underwhelming... Decent at premium multiplexes, but unable to connect *and* collect beyond metros... Needs to cover lost ground on Day 3... Fri 4.77 cr, Sat 6.90 cr. Total: ₹ 11.67 cr. #India biz.”

The film has performed well in Kolkata, Bangalore and Delhi-NCR. In the overseas markets, the film was released across 460 screens. It collected INR 5.57 lacs in Australia and INR 4.07 lacs in New Zealand.

Critics have appreciated Deepika’s and Vikrant Massey’s strong performances in the movie. Giving the film 3.5 stars, Sreeparna Sengupta wrote in the Times of India, "Deepika Padukone is the soul of the film, delivering a brilliant, immersive performance. In fact, there are many scenes where her act will move you to tears – like the one where she holds up an earring to her face but realizes now she can’t put it on.”  The reviewer further said, “Chhaapak is a sensitive film with a delicate, yet powerful, handling of a heinous crime against women, and an important story that needs to be heard.“
