Bottle Cap Challenge: Where Did It Come From? What Is It? Here’s What You Need to Know About the Viral Craze
The bottle cap challenge is sweeping across social media. Action star Jason Statham, UFC champion Conor McGregor and Gully Boy actor Siddhant Chaturvedi have already joined in
The popularity of the bottle cap challenge started in the world of mixed martial arts (MMA), and the pros made it look easy, here’s what you need to know
UFC Featherweight Champion Max Holloway demonstrates:
As the challenged gained popularity, Jason Statham decided to undertake the challenge with the utmost agility and finesse:
The premise is simple on paper, however it is evidently far less simple to achieve in practice: All you have do is deliver a spinning back kick to an unscrewed bottle cap and knock it off the bottle without knocking the bottle over. You must then proceed to post the proof on Instagram. After being challenged by John Mayer, Statham wrote in the caption of his post, “#bottlecapchallenge #challengeaccepted @erlsn.acr This thing landed on my head from @johnmayer but will quickly go to a couple of fellas we’ve seen do push-ups badly.” He also made a couple of challenges, adding, “All yours @guyritchie and @jmoontasri,” referencing martial artist James Moontasri. Ludacris also commented on the post, writing, “And the winner is…..” while John Mayer, 41, accepted defeat, writing, “You: tall Keanu. Me: short Keanu.”
Moving on from Jason Statham, Conor McGregor, the former UFC lightweight and featherweight champion, took the challenge from actor Jason Stratham, and executed it impeccably. McGregor then proceeded to nominate none other than… Floyd Mayweather, his opponent and arch rival in The Money Fight. While Mayweather took advantage of his leverage to dictate the terms of their 2017 boxing match, for the bottle cap challenge, he won’t be able to negotiate the ruleset and change it to punching exclusively, so don’t hold your breath waiting for him to take Floyd up on the challenge.
The bottle cap challenge has also made its way across the oceans! Recently, Siddhanth Chaturvedi posted a video in which he undertook the challenge. He effortlessly executes the daunting task and makes it look ever so easy.
The origin of the worldwide challenged was traced and it initially began approximately a week ago by taekwondo champion Farabi Davletchin from Kazakhstan. Farabi posted the first bottle-cap video from his Instagram account, @farakicks. In the video, Davletchin kicks the blue cap of a plastic water bottle clear off (while someone holding the bottle, which appears to be more than half full). The video was filmed in slow motion, to highlight and accentuate the precision of the kick. He captioned the challenge #farakickschallenge, but also used the hashtag #bottlecapchallenge.
Davletchin initially challenged actors known for their martial arts stunts, including Jackie Chan and Jean-Claude Van Damme, but surprisingly, Canadian fashion designer Errolson Hugh happily took up and embraced the challenge. Not only did Hugh successfully kick a pink cap clear off a glass bottle, but he did it in such a way that in slow motion, the cap appears to drift upward like a butterfly. Hugh, 47, hashtagged his video: “#notbadforafashiondesignerlol”
Several martial artists followed suit, including Max Holloway, who tagged John Mayer — who is not known the be the most skilled martial artist. Surprisingly however, John nailed the challenge, leaving other stars like Shawn Mendes, Questlove, and David Spade stunned. "I actually can't believe this wow," Shawn commented.

Cummings was a producer and writer for the ABC revival of Roseanne. She captioned her video: “This challenge is way too much of a fest for my liking. I nominate @stellamccartney@caradelevingne @karliekloss@christineandthequeens @lynn_ban@cassandragracey#bottlecapchallenge#challengeaccepted #noplastic STOp USING PLASTIC BOTTLES SUCKERS.”
In a hilarious take on the bottle cap challenge, the world famous DJ, Diplo posted his attempt. He comically captioned his video: “Since no one requested me to do this (@johnmayer ) and also since no one thinks I'm good at anything except pushing button on stage .. here is evidence that I also do karate. I challenge Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, Kevin Durant and Obama @sussexroyal @easymoneysniper@barackobama #bottlecapchallenge” Everyone is waiting to see if the royals and Obama will take up this challenge…what do you think?
As the challenge continues to gain popularity, on lookers are excited to see who will take part and how creative they will get and also…who will mess up! Who do you want to see taking on this challenge?
