For Akshay Kumar, Sarfira is more than just another release. This was expected to be the film that was going to break his string of flop films. Directed by Sudha Kongara, this Hindi remake of Suriya’s Soorarai Pottru might not end up breaking the streak and that can largely be attributed to the rather ambitious budget of 85 crores. Has the film’s financial weight hindered its box office prospects?
Akshay Kumar impresses but collections are modest
Sarfira embarked on its box office journey with a modest opening, collecting a mere 2.50 crores on its first day. For a star as humongous as Akshay Kumar, one must admit that the number was rather underwhelming. The film’s success now hinges on word-of-mouth. A slow process that began positively but is taking time to translate into footfalls. Despite the competition from other releases, including Indian 2 and Kalki 2898 AD, Akshay Kumar’s star power remains a driving force that could change the fortunes of the film.
‘Sarfira’ needs to win the weekdays and second weekend
As the weekend unfolded, Sarfira did witness a considerable jump. On its second day (Saturday), it raked in 4.50 crores, showcasing a 70% growth compared to its lacklustre opening. But it was Sunday—the pivotal third day—that truly tested the film’s mettle. With another 20% surge, Sarfira collected 5.1 crores, bringing its overall total to 11.85 crores after three days. But, once again, is that enough for a big-budget Akshay Kumar film? The answer is clear to everyone.
Can Akshay Kumar win back the trust of the masses?
Akshay Kumar is no stranger to box office triumphs. But, he now faces a unique challenge with Sarfira. After a string of recent failures, rebuilding trust among audiences is paramount. The film’s success rests not only on its numbers but also on its ability to resonate with viewers. Sudha Kongara’s storytelling prowess and the chemistry between Akshay Kumar, Radhika Madan, and Paresh Rawal hold the key.
The road ahead for the superstar
As per recent estimates, Sarfira’s first weekend collections are expected to land somewhere between 13-14 crores. This is mildly impressive considering some of the previous disappointments. But, if the film continues on this kind of journey, its lifetime collections will far significantly far from breaking even purely on the basis of ticket sales. Should the film’s budget come in for scrutiny?
