When Sonam Kapoor said “Women should stop objectifying themselves,” while reacting to Deepika Padukone cleavage controversy leaving netizens fuming

Sonam Kapoor and Deepika Padukone came together on Koffee With Karan Season 3 in 2010. The two were on a rampage taking potshots and digs at Ranbir Kapoor that are truly for the ages. Four years later, little did we know the tables would turn on Deepika and Sonam would be taking sly and direct digs at her. In the fourth season of the show, the Khoobsurat actress called Deepika a good girl gone bad and that she had an over enthusiastic PR team. Nobody knows what went wrong between them.

And in 2014, when leading publication Times Of India posed a close-up of Deepika’s cleavage, a majority of the celebrities from Bollywood came to her support but Sonam didn’t really care as per a video that has gone viral on social media.

Was Sonam Kapoor mean to Deepika Padukone?

At an event ahead of the release of her film Khoobsurat, when Sonam Kapoor was asked about her friend Deepika who was mired in this massive controversy, the actress corrected the journalist by saying she was a colleague and not a friend.

She then went on to say, “As long as women stop objectifying themselves, people will stop objectifying them.”

The actress added, “I think we have spoken so much on it already. That’s what I said people have to respect themselves first for people to respect them. I hope that answers your question.”

Sonam Kapoor- Miss Foot In Mouth

There have been many instances when the Saawariya actress has been trolled on social media for saying both nasty and amusing things about others. She has also been called out for patting her own back.

On Koffee With Karan, she called herself an icon that made social media users roll their eyes in disbelief. She even said the whole industry needs a fashion check since they all ‘suck.’

Where is Sonam Kapoor?

Between 2013 and 2018, Sonam Kapoor had back to back hits that included films like Raanjhanaa, Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, Khoobsurat, Prem Ratan Dhan Payo, Neerja, Pad Man, and Veere Di Wedding. Post the debacle of her 2019 film The Zoya Factor, she hasn’t had a theatrical release.

She was last seen in the film called Blind that directly streamed on JioCinema last year. And it was only last year when she announced her new film.

Sonam Kapoor’s next film

Sonam Kapoor said she would start working on her next feature film, an adaptation of Anuja Chauhan’s novel “Battle of Bittora”, in 2024. No official announcement about the film has been made yet and we are halfway through the year.

At the Jio MAMI Mumbai Film Festival’s market initiative ‘Word to Screen’, Sonam told PTI, “I’m going to do ‘Battle for Bittora’ next year, finally. That’s a beloved character but I feel a lot of girls might have read the book.”

The actress added, “I feel a lot of girls, maybe of our generation know (about the book), but I don’t think the younger generation knows the character as much. So, we have the advantage of that.” Will this be a turnaround for the actress and a comeback she needs?
