Abhishek Bachchan and Kareena Kapoor, in the early 2000s, were known to have a sibling-like bond. With Karisma Kapoor set to marry actor Abhishek Bachchan, Kareena Kapoor found it difficult to play a romantic lead opposite him. In their debut film, Refugee (2000), directed by JP Dutta, Kareena and Abhishek were cast as the main leads. While the movie turned out to be a big hit, the actors found it uncomfortable to perform romantic scenes due to their real-life relationship off-screen. It was later revealed that Kareena Kapoor was skeptical about doing intimate scenes with her to-be brother-in-law.
In an interview with Simi Garewal, actor Abhishek Bachchan shared the behind-the-scenes details of Refugee. He said, “I will never forgive you for ruining me in that scene because I remember the first thing you ever said to me was that AB, this is our first romantic scene together, and how can I fall in love with you? You’re like my brother.”
Kareena Kapoor also shared how, due to Karisma Kapoor being set to marry Abhishek Bachchan, the relationship between Kareena and Abhishek felt sibling-like. However, things changed in between, but it did not alter the way she felt about him. She said, “I have always maintained that Abhishek is the first actor with whom I gave my first shot. To me, he holds a very special place in my heart that no actor and no person can ever take. When I look at him, I look at him with pride, joy, and happiness. It’s sad things went sour.”
She added that if Abhishek Bachchan ever refused to work with her, she would understand and believes “people should respect that.” Kareena Kapoor explained, “If he chooses not to do a film with me, it’s vice versa because I understand the comfort levels will not be the same, likewise from my side as well. I think people should respect that.”
For the unversed, Kareena Kapoor’s sister, Karisma Kapoor, and Abhishek Bachchan were set to tie the knot in the early 2000s. However, the engagement was called off, and Babita Kapoor asked her daughter to marry a wealthy businessman, Sanjay Kapur. Karisma Kapoor and Sanjay Kapur married in 2003 and sadly separated in 2014. As for Abhishek Bachchan, he married Aishwarya Rai in 2007, and the couple is blessed with a beautiful daughter, Aaradhya Bachchan.
