Vinod Khanna, the suave Bollywood hero’s precursor, made an indelible mark on Indian cinema. With his grin, baritone voice, and commanding screen presence, Khanna began his career playing serious villainous roles before becoming one of the most sought-after heroes of the 1970s and 80s.
Romantic dramas or grim action movies, whatever the format, Vinod Khanna had an innate ability to bring emotional depth and masculine charm to all of his performances.
Vinod Khanna’s on-screen kiss with Baahubali actress
Apart from his on-screen career, Vinod Khanna was equally admired for his off-screen persona, serene, reflective, and dignified. His brief interlude in the early 1980s to follow spiritual guru Osho was a bold move, that of an individual willing to follow his truth. On his return to the screen, his grown-up suave only added depth to his performances, turning him into a director’s darling as well as an audience favourite.
However, one on-screen scene in the 90s provoked more talk than most could have predicted. Parampara, in 1993, by Yash Chopra, came with a star-studded cast of Sunil Dutt, Aamir Khan, Saif Ali Khan, Neelam, and a South newcomer, Ramya Krishnan, who would later become a cult figure as Sivagami in Baahubali. While Parampara tanked at the box office and got lambasted by critics, one song from the movie made everyone’s eyebrows pop out of their sockets due to sheer boldness.
Vinod Khanna’s song with Ramya Krishnan
The song Tu Sawan Mein Pyar Piya Piya Ki featured Vinod Khanna and Ramya Krishnan in a bold, sensuous sequence that was a light year ahead of its time. Their steaming and sensual sex on-screen shocked audiences, especially in a time when Hindi cinema was timidly experimenting with sensuality. Most surprising to everyone was a sex scene during a song in which Khanna opens Ramya’s blouse and is followed by a sultry on-screen kiss, something rarely seen in 90s Bollywood, let alone with an actor of Khanna’s seniority.
Although the film did not disrupt the box office, this particular scene was a topic of interest. It was a period when Bollywood flirted with stronger expressions of romance, and Vinod Khanna reasserted he wasn’t afraid to defy conventions, even towards the end of his career. That it also featured Ramya Krishnan, who is now well known for playing the role of Sivagami Devi in the Baahubali series.
