Samantha Ruth Prabhu has carved a niche for herself and made a mark in Indian cinema. Despite the fact that she has seen many ups and downs in her career and personal space, she continues to focus on her work. She was last seen in Raj and DK’s web-series Citadel: Honey Bunny that also stars Varun Dhawan. With the advent of OTT, the content has seen mild change in the way women characters are written even if we lag behind as compared to the West. But what does the actress have to say about the representation of women in films? How does she gaze at it?
Samantha Ruth Prabhu is not happy with how actresses are essayed in films and spoke about it recently in an interview.
Samantha Ruth Prabhu breaks her silence
Samantha told Business Today, “I think people are looking for authenticity, and they need to see that and every brand that I associate myself with has to represent who I truly am…”
The actress added, “When I speak about authenticity, it needs to translate into everything I do. I feel very responsible while picking roles, and I feel it needs to have a fair representation of women in society today.”
Samantha Ruth Prabhu: Women’s roles are defined by the male actor
The Yashoda actor also said hoe women’s roles in cinema are defined by the male actor. “More often than not, there is a false representation of women in films, because mostly roles of women in these films are defined by the male actor or the male protagonist, and not really a woman’s journey and her strengths and weaknesses.”
She continued, “She’s mostly defined by her relationships, not by her experiences. I have made a conscious decision to pick roles that fairly represent women, as well as the brands that I represent.”
Samantha Ruth Prabhu on Citadel: Honey Bunny
In this show that’s a spin-off of Priyanka Chopra’s one, Samantha nicely showcases the despair of an out of work actor and gets the comedic energy of her character spot on.
She told Firstpost about her experience of working with Raj and DK and said, “Thanks to Raj & DK for offering me an action role because that was a shift that I didn’t see coming at all. I was always playing this girl next door cute (se) roles.”
The actress added, “I never thought that I can land a punch. It is a welcome change and it gives me more to explore. I think every time I work on a project there is a new facet that I discover and that I can tap into.”
