In the highly anticipated web series “Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar,” which marks the OTT debut of acclaimed filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Richa Chadha plays the role of Lajjo, a charismatic courtesan. To prepare for this significant role, Richa delved into the iconic portrayal of Shahibjaan by legendary actress Meena Kumari in the classic film “Pakeezah.”
Richa Chadha’s revelation about drawing inspiration from Meena Kumari’s performance adds a layer of anticipation and reverence to her portrayal of Lajjo. She expressed how studying Meena Kumari’s character was not only enriching but also transformative, shaping her understanding of Lajjo’s depth and complexity.
She said, “Richa said, “Carefully observing, learning from and taking lessons from Meena Kumari ji’s character in Pakeezah was a truly enriching and deeply transforming experience for me ahead of shooting for Heeramandi.”
In her preparation for the role, Richa Chadha meticulously studied Meena Kumari’s voice, diction, and mannerisms, sometimes even imitating them to capture the essence of Lajjo’s character. This dedication reflects her commitment to authenticity and her desire to pay homage to a cinematic legend like Meena Kumari.
She added, “In the movie, Paakezah, Meena Kumari’s character has a certain tragic depth and complexity that resonated with Lajjo, the character that I play in the show. I worked on the voice and diction, while studying Meena ji’s work, to the point of imitation sometimes.”
The production team commended Richa Chadha’s efforts, acknowledging how her interpretation of Lajjo, influenced by Meena Kumari’s iconic portrayal, has added layers of authenticity to the character. Richa’s passion and understanding have contributed significantly to bringing Lajjo to life on screen.
“Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar” boasts an ensemble cast featuring Manisha Koirala, Sonakshi Sinha, Aditi Rao Hydari, Sanjeeda Sheikh, Sharmin Segal, Fardeen Khan, Taha Shah, Shekhar Suman, and Adhyayan Suman, alongside Richa Chadha. The series, exploring the intricate world of courtesans, is set to premiere on Netflix on May 1, promising audiences a captivating journey into a realm filled with intrigue and allure.
