Ever since the Meena Kumari biopic was announced, anticipation has been steadily building around who will step into the shoes of the iconic actress. Titled Kamal Aur Meena, the film is being helmed by Sidharth P. Malhotra, who has joined hands with Saregama and the Amrohi family to bring this poignant love story to the big screen.
Chronicling the passionate and complex relationship between celebrated actress Meena Kumari and legendary filmmaker Kamal Amrohi, the biopic has now reached a key casting stage, with the search for its leading lady reportedly nearing completion.
Kiara Advani as Meena Kumari

Now, as per the Bollywood Hungama report, Bollywood actress Kiara Advani has been approached to play Meena Kumari in this biopic. Tajdar Amrohi, son of Pakeezah director Kamal Amrohi, revealed that Kiara Advani is a strong contender for the role of his mother. “She hasn’t been signed as yet. But she is likely to play my mother,” Tajdar said, confirming ongoing discussions.
Filmmaker Siddharth P Malhotra, who is set to direct the project, also acknowledged Kiara’s possible involvement. “Kiara is in consideration. But I will lock in the casting in August. For now, I am off to the USA for a month,” he said. However, he admitted that while finalising Meena Kumari’s role seems straightforward, the real challenge lies in casting Kamal Amrohi.
“Casting for Meena Kumari ji part is relatively easy. The harder part is casting for Kamal Amrohi Saab. I need to lock in the hero first. I will lock in Meena ji only after I find the perfect Kamal Amrohi,” Malhotra explained.

Describing the essence of the film, Malhotra emphasised that the story is rooted in passion and cinematic legacy. “Kamal Aur Meena is my Romeo & Juliet on the love between the greatest director–actress pair of Indian cinema,” he said.
Back in September last year, Siddharth P. Malhotra unveiled the teaser for Kamal Aur Meena, confirming that the project had officially entered the casting phase. In the caption accompanying the teaser, Malhotra wrote, “With access to over 500 handwritten letters exchanged between Kamal Sahaab and Meenaji as well as personal journals detailing their life together the insights and research we have in telling this story in invaluable. It’s a profound privilege to direct this incredible true story, though the responsibility is immense.”
